Pedal Commander Review - Realistic Tuner Replacement?

New vehicles no longer use a throttle cable, in fact, it is electronic and sends a voltage that opens the throttle body. Unfortunately, you can lose that linear feel. But no matter! Today's video features Jay Flat Out reviewing the Pedal Commander, a Pedal Commander Review has been a long time coming and I hop you enjoy!

The haters need to be educated on how this works before they make the comments about "snake oil" or stuff like "just press the pedal faster". Throttle by wire systems used to just be a 1:1 analog signal from the pedal, and the ECU's job was to keep up with the engines demands based on input from the engine sensors. Now the pedal sends digital codes to the ECU first, but it's not 1:1 from the foot pedal - everything, including the throttle position, is controlled by the ECU.

The pedal is an electronic device is and is just one device of many that sends digital codes to the ECU that tell the engine how to respond. The ECU reads a digital code from the pedal and all other sensors and interprets how to make the engine and transmission work together to reduce emissions and provide a smooth drivable response (thanks to EPA and NHTSA). Throttle sensitivity boosters do more than just amplify the signal from the pedal, and it's done in a way that can not be mimicked by just increasing the speed in which you press the pedal - it talks to the ECU and then the ECU changes everything about how the truck responds - which means the fuel injector ramps, waste gates (boost), shift characteristics, etc. Very simply, it's a "dumb" tuner with fixed parameters, and it is not recorded as an ECU change because it's just an input to the ECU, not like a tuner that changes the ECU (which is why it can not be detected by dealers for warranty issues and it's allowed for sale in CA).

Think of it this way: your gas pedal sends signals to the ECU that mimics it's position in order of depression - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so on. It can only be in that order no matter how fast you press the pedal down, and based on that input order, the ECU will not go past a certain ramp up speed no matter how fast you push down the pedal. it will be very close to 1:1 if you press it normally; but the faster you press it down, the ramp curve slows down because the ECU is waiting for the inputs from the emissions system and trans to catch up. But that process is based in part on the digital codes coming from the pedal - in very simple laymens terms, the booster sort of changes the send the order to 1, 3, 5, 7..., or 1, 5, 10, 15.. and the ECU is tricked into thinking it has to play catch up, which takes priority over the other emissions and fuel economy inputs. That's way over simplified, but the point is don't think this just increases the analog amplitude of a signal from the gas pedal, because that would obviously have no effect on an ECU controller car.

I could show how it works with with math and graphs and stuff, but i've already probably bored everyone to death with my tech dork description, so just try the device and see for yourself.

I finally installed the Pedal Commander in my 18 Ecodiesel. After a few weeks of driving around. I have a few things to say. First Fiat/Ram what the hell? The difference is night and day. There had been a few times I feared pulling out in traffic. I thought my truck was too slow in getting up to speed. Until this video, I never knew about the voltage thing. Now my truck is a really good daily driver. Thx for the video Jay. PS I bought my module through Amazon for $210

I just hooked mine up. It has taken a dangerously under accelerating truck and made it a properly accelerating truck. I was seriously regretting my eco diesel purchase, this has changed my mind. Thanks for your awesome videos. Now off to work to save for the King's.

i actually bought this for my 2013 gmc sierra because I didn't like the lag between the throttle body and the pedal, and I must say it has made a huge difference. Its like driving a whole different truck and the price isn't bad at all for what you get, it has over 32 different settings for you to find the one you you like.

Liked that you took a few days before making the review. Thank you for doing that! Appreciate the solid review.

It makes it quicker, not faster. And yes it does exactly what it was intended for.

Good using pedal commander for over a year...money well spent. I put it to stock for my wife when she drives and can't imagine driving without it now. I have exhaust and a cold air intake to go along with pedal commander and runs like a Hemi should just wants to go fast.

Wouldn't drive a Ram without one now. The adjustability also is great depending on road conditions.

I have a Hemi Ram with an edge tune, K&N CAI, BBK shorty headers, flowmaster outlaw super 10 exhaust, Shift kit, line booster, and 355 gears with the pedal commander. I no longer use the pedal commander. It makes the truck TOO fast as far as throttle response. Literally it works as advertised and I am fully satisfied with it, but I need to not replace tires every 30000 miles. The plus 4 sport option makes the truck seem like a beast. 0-10% throttle input equals 0-100% normal throttle input. Very great for reaction times and off the line acceleration. Whenever I let someone drive the truck, I put the pedal commander to sport+ and +4
Everyone says its the fastest most powerful vehicle they have ever driven

I have one in my 13 ram hemi and found city+4 works best for my daily driver. I have never got any codes thrown so its pretty good for what it is

Very informative and unbias, now with this information I will purchase the pedal commander and hopefully remove that dead pedal syndrome my truck has Cheers Mate

I love it; it works great on my Tacoma SR 4x4! Basically it controls throttle response. It doesn't add power to your engine, but allows you to access it more or less quickly by varying the strength of the electronic signal sent to the ECU. I do everything from towing a 3, 500lb travel trailer in the lowest Eco mode and get as much as 15mpg, to off roading where at times I want less response because it's so bumpy you don't want "crisp" throttle respinse, or sometimes more to power thru a mud bog. I have 33" tires as opposed to the stock 29" tires that came on the truck, and factoring in the corrected mileage, I get 18mpg city with a constant 300lbs of crap in the bed, a roof rack, no front air dam, etc. It's better than a "chip" because of it's choice of 39 different settings, doesn't violate your warranty, and you're not stuck with crappy mileage because you upped your horse power with a one-dimentional performance chip. I've been running it for a year and my comments are based on actual experience. Worth the money!

Good review!
Just getting ready to install mine in my 2019 Laramie.
I already installed an S&B cold air intake and did a muffler delete so it sounds badass but being a lifted, heavy truck it needs a little help off the line and a little better fuel economy.
Thanks again, looking forward to using mine!

I am grateful to have come across your review. My car which has a 2.0 i4, still has lag (even after doing a performance mod). What annoys me is when the rpm’s kick in over 2000 due to hill assist. If this makes for a more linear power flow, my decision is much easier.

It's really for from the stop light in small turbo engines with a lot of TURBO lag until RPMs get up ...

I just installed the pedal commander in my mini cooper s and WOW what a difference... it's not the same car! Regular sport mode with the car in sport also screams off the line, it pulls so hard leaving the lights now.

Thanks for the review! I just bought this with little research. I look forward to installing this with a cold air intake. I hope to cut some fuel consumption with these minor upgrades.

I drove from Atlanta Georgia to St. Louis Missouri in my 2019 challenger r/t. I had the pedal on eco mode. I got 30mpg on the trip. I did get on it some too.

Been using now on a 2012 ram 1500 4.7. for almost 3 years. It was the best improvement i have made besides tires.. Get rid of your goodyears and get anything after that.. Then get a pedal commander. It makes a weak 4.7 feel like a sports car. Also city +2 gives me better gas mileage then the factory settings do.
