Driving the Scariest Road in Norway | Stuck in Snow | OiN JOTUNHEIM Series EP1 | Land Rover Drive

In Overlanding in Norway Jotunheim Series EP1 we are heading for Øvre Årdal and the Tinde road which will take us up into the mountains of Jotunheim.

But just getting to the start of Jotunheim would turn out to be more of a struggle than we had planned. All because of our weakness for Norways backcountry side roads.

Let's just say that this old and forgotten road from over a hundred years ago is a bit of a challenge for any drivers nerves.

Stuck and Scary roads are the theme in this episode and I think you will like the camping area at then end too.

Info about
Road is located in Øvre Årdal, and is the old road to Tyin and Valdre. They starting building it in 1910, the steep part, than continued to Tyin in 1934, even expanded during WW2. This road is often referred to as tusenmeteren or 1000 meteren, because the top is 1020 meters above sea level and 1000 meters above Øvre Årdal. If you go off here, you don't stop until you hit the bottom.

From Visit Årdal
"
The Øvre Årdal - Valdres road over Heirsnosi was opened in 1934. The demand for a road from Øvre Årdal to Valdres was first put forward in 1887 as a result of power development, and construction work started in 1910 by Tyinfaldene A/S. In the center of Øvre Årdal, one can today see the monument to the sluskane, as the road builders were called, who dug in, bricked up and built the road by hand. It took many men and more than 30 years to finish the road, but in 1934 it was ready.

And with a height difference of over 1000 metres, and 42 sharp hairpin bends (also called Røyrgatevegen) from Øvre Årdal up to 1000 m above sea level, the road immediately became a tourist attraction!

Nope, nope nope. Made me dizzy just watching. I drove the going to the sun road in Montana a few times, I don't think I could do it again.

I froze up last time on that road and my wife had to drive my truck the rest of the way, I literally froze and blocked the road lol. Hate looking down a few thousand feet and seeing clouds lol.

Well done Simon!

Look very similar to the roads we have here in BC, Canada. Hundreds, thousands of kms's of logging roads all through the forests and up the sides of mountains. Some long forgotten. The best.

Epic drive. Just reminded me to order some winter tyres for my Disco Sport.

My goodness, if that beautiful dirt road is scary I wouldn’t be able to bring you out on the Pi’ilani highway on East Maui. It hangs out over 600’ foot undercut single lane dirt that routinely landslides into the Pacific Ocean. My friend forgot to put the emergency brake on his Jeep and it rolled into the ocean which is 600 meters deep. Plus if it is raining mauka (up hill) you get boulders rolling down the drybeds and across the fords.

A fabulous video Simon. The scenery is breathtaking. Great to see Erik back and his lovely Discovery Sport. The two cars compliment each other. A great adventure most of us can only dream of, although the big drop in temperature would need some adjustment. 😵‍💫

Been there in summer on motorbike and my old RRc, Il Tomate, absolutely worth a third trip.
Hope you will share more vids with us. Splendid filming and all the rest needed for publishing.

The palms of my hands were sweating just watching that! 😂

It looked so high, I think you would die from starvation before you hit the bottom 😂

Great video like all of them very much 👍 you do them in a very special charm and full of sympathy.
In that type of spring slushy snow even the best winter tires can struggle very fast.
My dad has driven the new discovery for years now and was very satisfied with General Grabbers AT's on in.
Greetings from nothern Sweden 🇸🇪

Another stunning video, a really nice production. Views are epic, great to see, would be fantastic to experience the region / country as well. As far as driving in those conditions, probably not something I would enjoy, mainly due to the fact I've never driven in snow, but still great to see it via the camera. Well done Simon, you should be proud of this one.

Oh, nice switchbacks on gravel! Even more "challenging" than the switchbacks north of Geiranger. Which are frankly only challenging because of oncoming coaches with chinese tourists :D

Btw: what's Erics ovarall experience with the Sport? Thinking of getting one for my wife as she likes it. What MY / Engine / Gearbox is it, is it another moneypit?

As always a very nice video with stunning views. I'd be tempted to drive that road, but only in the summer I think. Look forward to seeing the next episode. Both yours and Erik's cars look well together. I hope Erik still has his classic though?

Great video guys. Loving those roads. Really want to get some off-road tyres on the Range Rover!
The sausage, eggs and peppers wrap looked awesome. We will try that next time we are camping😊

Oh, and thank you for taking the trouble to record your videos in English. It is appreciated 🙂

As usual, always a great pleasure to relax to your wonderful videos, Simon. As far as that road goes, it reminded me of the most dangerous roads in india across the himalayan border. Tough road indeed. By the way. In french, Extra Fort means Very Strong. Looking forward to part 2 in two weeks time. Hope you had great times with your wife when she came to join you in the camper van...
