I do the same thing too, but because I still want to see the different colours on the model space, I go to the paper space, double click and enter the model space, go to layers, select all layers, and change the viewport colour to grey (not the first column of colours), this way everything architect appears grey on paper space only and of course when I print, my drainage design stands out, and I can still see colours on the model space where I'm working :-)

How do you handle scaling? I typically do -DWGUNITS, and set to 6 for metres. If it's in mm, then scaling is fine, if sth else, like inches, then after the -DWGUNITS, I select all in model space, and scale it manually by a factor so that a line that measured 1 inch now still measures 1 but in metre unit. What I haven't worked out yet is when scaling a drawing that was on the right coordinate system, I have to pick a point, say point P, coordinates of which I know (say X: 3, Y:5), select everything, and move it with that point as a base point, and I type in the point coordinate...I feel like there is a better way of doing it at the point of scaling. When I get architects drawings, point P is initially at the right (3, 5) coordinate, when I scale it so that it's in metres, point P is no longer at (3, 5), so I do as explained above basically.
