One Star Being Eaten by Another Will Take Revenge as a Black Hole

Astronomers have discovered a dramatic celestial power play within the vastness of space:
A larger star is devouring its companion. However, the smaller star is set to retaliate.
It's predicted to transform into a black hole, eventually turning the tables and feeding off its massive counterpart.
This stellar duo, known as SSN 7, comprises the most massive contact binary ever discovered - two stars in such proximity they're virtually touching.
Situated in NGC 346, a star-forming region within the Small Magellanic Cloud, this cosmic drama is unfolding in a galaxy approximately 200,000 light-years away.
The phenomenon presents a rare opportunity to observe the life cycle of stars and the genesis of black holes.

Only 200, 000 light years away? OK, good. I thought it was somewhere close by

If the one becomes a black hole how does it pull the other star in? Its mass would not change therefore its gravitational pull from a distance would not change. Only when you get close to it would its pull be felt.

Still trying to understand how the smaller star will become black hole 1st.
