The data on the connection between alcohol and cognitive impairment, including various types of dementia such as Alzheimer's Disease and Alcohol Related Brain Damage, is somewhat dizzying.

Some research suggests that alcohol could be helpful -- at least in moderation; while other research seems to indicate the opposite.

In this video, I wade into the waters and try to make some sense of the information.

Some literature shows that apoe4 carriers are affected negatively by any amount of alcohol and only non-e4s gain benefit. But there isn't that much data either. I'm a 3/4 male without family history. Definitely drank in my 20s.

My thoughts are that alcohol is fun, and life needs to be enjoyed, but one should follow probably a 95/5 rule. Optimal blood work, blood pressure, sleep, diet, exercise, fish and b vitamin intake? Alright you're doing well, now don't forget to go enjoy life and yes that may mean having a drink or two or three once in a while, and yes it may mean getting 'drunk' a handful of times of the year too. Will it raise risk? Probably, but how much? The goal isn't maximum longevity, the goal is a long and enjoyable life.
