Doctor Reacts To NEW AMSTERDAM Plane Crash Episode

New Amsterdam is a very entertaining medical drama, and their recent season 3 premiere didn’t hold back on the excitement, as we witness a passenger jet make an emergency landing on New York City’s East River, similar to Sully Sullenberger’s miracle on the Hudson. Just because the show is exciting doesn’t mean it’s medically accurate though, so I dove in to assess the reality of what a large-scale trauma emergency would look like. A few moments here left me scratching my head, such as the high improbably case of a plane’s antifreeze preventing a wound from clotting, and why a hospital would ever intentionally hide a patient from law enforcement. If there are any pilots out there, please chime in and let me know how accurate the airplane material was!

Pilot Here. You absolutely give up any freedom to deny toxicology testing when you are flying commercially. This is written into almost any employment contract with an airline, failing that, in Canada where I fly, Transport Canada has the ability to perform a non invasive drug test at any time they wish, and an invasive (ie bloodwork) after a crash, especially when pilot error is suspect, though usually on every serious accident.

Plane: **Crashes sideways, breaking off a wing in the process**

Doctor Mike: That looks like a pretty smooth landing

1:36 I thought the same thing! Looked like a pretty smooth landing. Then the next second, I was like oop- I guess it wasn’t?

Fun fact: the ‘black box’ or the cockpit voice recorder(CVR) sits in the tail because in MOST crashes the tail of the plane survives the crash. So when picking seats. Pick as far back as you can.

I love when doctors react to shows like this. Every time I watch them I always wonder could that be real. So it’s good to hear from a professional

is it just me that loves that his intros aren’t 10 minutes? instead they’re just straight to the point 😌🤝

Medical dramas = obscure diseases or emergencies + doctors with no personal or professional boundaries + insane moral and ethical violations + emotional deaths or goodbyes - all the boring stuff (i.e. paperwork, preventative medicine, rehab, and insurance).

Every hospital show has that one episode where the "main" doctors get into some "life changing" trauma that either kills a main character or two of them...

Outlander has a lot of good medical scenes that would be interesting to see you react to! The main character who has gone back in time often applies her knowledge of mid 20 th century medicine to mid 18th century patients. Really cool!

She does use a lot of herbal remedies but there are lots of surgery scenes as well!!!

My brother watches New Amsterdam. He says it’s cheesy, and cliched and full of tropes- but he’s also surprised that the bigwigs let it get made because it is very different in one key aspect-

It supports socialised healthcare. It’s basically one big ad for socialising healthcare. And he appreciates it for that, which is fair enough.

On the smelling gum part, I had swore I smelled gas at my neighbors house. She called the fire department and they ran tests and found nothing. I came back in and still smelled gas, so she called housing again and they sent a plumber specialized in gas leaks. Turns out I was right and there was a tiny gas leak in her stove. Some people have super sensitive sense of smell.

Fun fact : most of the time the 'black box' has a orange color so they can be found easier

“why is the oncologist operating?”, what I ask myself whenever I watch this show. The main characters are Chairs of their departments but the act as if they are the only doctors in the hospital. Don’t you have a whole team of staff?

I remember growing up, me and my mom used to watch ER together. And I remember there was one doctor who got his arm cut off by an propella from a helicopter. He survived. Only to later get crushed by a crashing helicopter, right outside of the hospital.. Always thought that was kinda insane, but I see now that it's pretty standard to have these kind of episodes in medical dramas. 😅
