Pediatricians on the Frontlines of Gender-Affirming Care

This week, the Supreme Court ruled that Idaho could temporarily enforce a law that would ban providing gender-affirming care to minors. That means doctors who administer puberty blocking-drugs, hormone therapy, and perform certain surgeries could face up to 10 years in prison. It’s the latest move to prevent doctors from providing gender-affirming care to transgender youth. With politicians passing anti-trans bills and hospitals and doctors facing vitriol and threat, is this care on the line for trans kids? In this episode from the early days of our podcast, Audie speaks with two gender-affirming care providers to discuss the negative attention they’ve faced and understand the lifesaving care at risk.

I'm at min 18 or so. Still no mention of actual pediatric care, the methods, the risks, the evidence, the outcomes. What is this piece actually about? The nervousness of gender affirming care providers? Kids are at risk of infertility, sterility, lifelong medicalization, emotional distress and confusion and you think the biggest issue is the feelings of the providers?

I know someone is replying to comment saying that medical intervention is very rare in kids, but it should not even be rare, it should be totally not allowed. I'm sorry but gender-affirming "care" is not widely accepted in the medical field. As we are now seeing, it is widely questioned, if not outright denounced, however those voices of reason had been intimidated into silence by the alphabet army... But not anymore.

We have finally reached, and now passed, peak wholeness and things are starting to have some semblance of reality again.

Why would anybody want to risk infertility or sterility in otherwise healthy children, unless the alternative was death (by cancer, or other serious illness)? The alleged risk of suicide has been grossly exaggerated. Once you control for relatively common mental and emotional disorders among youth, there is NO elevated risk of suicide. Ms Cornish is not a dumby. Neither are the news writers who developed this piece. Why are they missing this rather important information?

FYI - the AAPs position on gendering affirming treatment was not adopted via a vote or even a peer-reviewed process. It was writing by one guy, a resident (not a full MD) who then lobbied a rules committee to approve. They approved it more or less without review. Since then, it has come under fire from member pediatricians, who have called repeatedly for review and discussion and who have, to date, been systematically excluded, by trans activist members. Look up Julia Mason. This is a case of agency capture, not careful, sober analysis followed by wide, informed debate and decision-making by members of the agency. Read the Cass Review, authored by eminent UK pediatrician, Hillary Cass, just released in the UK. It contains an exhaustive systematic review of the evidence base for gender affirming care. She found that the evidence base too weak to support these risky, often dangerous, experimental and irreversible treatments. The result is that the UK NHS will ban puberty blockers for youth. Sweden, Finland, France and other countries have taken a similar path. Why is the US falling behind?
