I'm not German but I always laugh to the fact that you can call a person "Hamburger" because they live in Hamburg. (🤣)

As someone from Rhineland Palatinate I always found it funny that virtually every other state has a stereotype and we don't. Even in the news if feel like we never get mentioned except maybe because of carnival. We're really just existing

Lower Saxony is geographically lower than Saxony if you go by altitude.

Technically there is no "up" on a map.

Alabamans to Saarlanders: maybe you and I are not so different after all

Some explanations cause it's 2am and I can't sleep lol:

0:00 Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, and just like with pretty much all other big cities here, rents are pretty much unaffordable.

0:03 Thuringia is a central German state that is not really known for anything except for their dumplings (Thüringer Klöße), which have a popular meme song written about them, and their Rostbratwürste (sausages).

0:05 Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost state and borders Denmark, with both regions sharing some cultural similarities. Also there's quite a significant minority of Danes living there (they even have their own party in our parliament, the SSW).

0:09 The Saarland is Germany's smallest state by area (excluding city states) and our second smallest state by population. They're basically our Alabama because we joke about them being into their family.

0:14 This one probably refers to the devastating flooding of the river Ahr which took place in the summer of 2021 in North-Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. It killed a bunch of people and destroyed many towns and villages.

0:18 Saxony has the highest percentage of voters voting for the AfD, a right wing populist/extremist party that is often compared to the Nazis.

0:21 We Bavarians like to insist that our state is the best of them all (because it is ;)). You can think of Bavaria as Germany's Texas, i.e. a very strong and pretty distinct regional identity.

0:25 The state of Lower Saxony actually lies to the north of the state of Saxony. As far as I know, it's called Lower Saxony because it's very flat, and so when it comes to elevation it's mostly below Saxony.

0:29 I don't really get this one, I've never heard of a stereotype about many old people living in Baden-Württemberg.

0:31 Swabians (people who live in central and eastern Baden-Württemberg and Western Bavaria) are known to be very stingy. I'd say that this is probably the most widespread stereotype in Germany lol.

0:38 A Krapfen (which is the only correct name of course) is a type of filled donut which is beloved across Germany. Around Berlin they're called "Pfannkuchen" (lit. "pancakes") and pretty much everywhere else in Germany except for Bavaria (we call them "Krapfen"), they're known as "Berliners". Debating what the "correct" name is has become a bit of a meme here in recent years.

0:45 The state of Saxony-Anhalt isn't really known for anything and is often confused with the more well known state of Saxony to its southeast.

0:49 The state of Rhineland-Palatinate is also not known for anything and rarely thought about.

0:52 There is no single South German dialect, but the dialects spoken down here (Bavarian, Swabian, Franconian, etc) are infamous for being very thick and hard to understand; second only perhaps to the abomination that is the Saxon dialect. Also, dialects are basically dead in North Germany, with North Germans being known for their very "clear" Standard German, while they're still somewhat common in the south.

0:58 Berliners are known to be very aggressive and rude, perhaps comparable to the American stereotype about New Yorkers.

1:04 The Abitur is Germany's high school graduation exam (actually it's a bit more complicated than that but whatever), which you have to pass in order to go to university. Since Germany is a very federalized country, each state gets to create their own exams, with Bavaria's Abitur being the hardest and many other states' Abiturs being renowned as very easy (including Brandenburg).
