Poet and activist Amanda Gorman spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, a night focused on fighting “for our freedoms,” from democracy to reproductive rights and more.
The former National Youth Poet Laureate recited her poem “This Sacred Scene” in front of the convention crowd. The piece celebrated the prospect of Vice President Kamala Harris as the first woman of color to become U.S. president.
In 2021, Gorman read her poem “The Hill We Climb” moments after President Joe Biden was sworn in at his inauguration.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will also formally accept the vice presidential nomination, a day before Harris takes the stage as the official nominee.
