“Green” may be your personal example of the “Pitiless Ratio”

I had to read this poem for my First Year English class in University. I really enjoyed it. We had to read it out of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, which had the Simon Armitage translation in it.

This is an amazing poem! I have the Burton Raffel translation and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I believe in my reading list for that year I put that the author was “anonymous wizard from Northern England”. This little gem is a true joy!

I've always loved Sir Gawain & the Green Knight.
You inspired me to collect a few Penguin Classics: Mysteries of Paris, by Sue. The Master & Margarita (deluxe), by Bulgakov. Journal of the Plague Year, by Defoe. A few Steinbeck deluxe editions, as well as Sweet Thursday. And... The Count of Monte Cristo, by Dumas. Thanks for sparking my interest.

I love Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and am only sorry that I didn’t discover it sooner. ETA: My favorite translation is the Simon Armitage—an amazing work imo—but I have several and enjoy them all.

Your 'dig' on Gawain near the video's beginning reminds me of a book sitting on my shelves unread. (At least I don't recall reading it.) It's titled "Gawain, Knight of the Goddess, Restoring an Archetype, " by John Matthews. Here's the blurb on the cover's backside:

"Gawain was once the most important knight at Arthur's court, a shining example of all that was best in chivalry at the time. However, as the popularity of the Arthurian romances grew the character of Gawain diminished, leaving him represented as a villain rather than as Champion of the Goddess. How this transformation came about, and the reasons why, are explored here by John Matthews."

One more thing to add to my TBR list, assuming my current slump departs.

"Not one of the fun knights." Perfect. I did enjoy watching him laying in bed being tempted though.

I thought Peter Jackson only made 27 Hobbit movies. 🎬

We read the original back in college. It takes some work to get through, but Middle English is very much approachable to fluent readers of Modern English. Still, it's nice to have a modern translation handy.

Have you seen the trailer yet of David Lowery’s new film The Green Knight?

I found reading it in the original to be a real challenge and much harder then Chaucer but it was definitely worth it.

We're you ever able to find the translation?

Hi Steve...I attempted to fascinate your inbox with an idea I’m working on for the community during Camp Nano next month. If you’re interested—or not—please let me know. As one of the most well-read people on YT, I think your opinion would bring something very special to this collaboration :)
