Whenever I hear this song, I don't think of necrophilia even though that seems like the most straightforward implication.

I vividly imagine an awkward kid (gender unimportant) learning of a classmate from childhood who had passed away and they are attending the funeral. They were never close, they never learned each other's names. But the kid used to crush on the classmate (Sally from afar), and now that she is gone, they have the song as their internal monologue the whole service. A giant morbid what-if daydream of Sally, alive but aloof and cold and them hoping to win Sally's affection, please smile for me. The daydream ends with the kid coming to accept at the end that it never mattered.

They can't project their sorrows, longing for love, and what adulthood meant on someone who left their life even before they shuffled off this mortal coil.
