And this is why I always try to have some sort of short conversation with the interpreter before my appointment, bc if I can't understand them then... the whole appointment is going to be very... stressful.

Reminds of that one lady caught faking it at some random event on the news 😂

I've been an Interpreter for 15 years and I still occasionally have nightmares that I arrive to an assignment and suddenly realize I've lost all my ASL knowledge and skill. 😭🤣

For my school play this week, some of the actors family’s were deaf, so we hired some interpreters and when it was posted that there were interpreters, way more people came that night.

Having to write it down cuz you know they wouldn't understand it if you signed it😭😂

Hearing people: you should be a professional interpreter!
Me: I took level 2 asl in high school and haven't had anyone to sign with in the past 10 years but sure I'm sure that would go over great. Would love to have that recorded.

I'm going to college for interpreting but it sounds so stressful having to ensure I'm providing the best interpreting I'm able to, to ensure the Deaf person has proper communication

Was the lack of "Thank You" sign when the interpreter responded to the hearing person part of the acting to emphasize the poor job.
I would think the jobs not over till you're out of there.

Or, me, beginner interpreter, thinking I’m NG and Deaf client says, “Good job.”

something that bothers me at work (hi i’m a pet store cashier who’s learning sign) is when a hearing customer sees me doing asl with a deaf or hoh customer and decide to heavily praise me. “that’s sUch an amazing thing you’re doing” is one i’ve heard a few times and it’s very clearly them saying that i’m doing so much extra/being charitable to help the people they see as not normal/lesser than. it’s a weird air because they don’t know really any of the signs i’m using so they don’t know if i’m even doing it right
it’s obnoxious

I’m currently in an interpreting program and I’ve heard so many situations like this and our program stresses to make sure the Deaf individual understands the information. I’m going out to socialize with the community to work on my skills and it has gotten easier but this will always be what I worry about. I strive to do the best I can ❤

It's videos like this that remind me I am good at lip reading and need to get my hearing checked because I'm pretty sure I can't hear well

Yeah I hate it when people who don't know ASL compliment me on how well I did because I know I was just stumbling through (I'm a level 4 ASL student)

I’m hearing and I only took one sign language class in college. I’m not fluent, but I have seen a bad interpreter where at one glance I could tell it didn’t follow the ASL sentence structure. I was so confused on how they got that job

The last big event i went to (my brothers graduation) had an interpreter, but the sound system was so genuinely shit that she (and everyone else) couldn't understand half of what was happening. I was sitting behind the group she was interpreting for and had the pleasure of seeing everyone giggling about how funny it was that even with a good interpreter absolutely fucking nothing was understood, but hey, at least they aren't the only confused ones.

Can you do a video on how to interact with interpreters? I legit am clueless. There is a person, speaking the words of a person I can't understand, and like... I don't know how to act. Can I talk to the interpreter?? How? And I don't want to exclude the other person! What about using my two words of ASL? Is that okay even if I do it wrong? Like you can try just about any language but the French don't appreciate it.

I’m learning sign language. On my last sign language class and I still feel I’m not fully ready to become an interpreters.
I want to intern and work beside individuals who are deaf so they can help me become interpreter who does make sense .

I still have so much to learn.
Especially with onomatopoeias, Temporal aspects, etc…

I would want you to tell me if I did good or not and how I could do better.
