A lot of people don’t realize that a “chippy steel” is still a steel, so it’s still gonna be somewhat tough at the very least.

Man, Ive had mine two days and its a slicey workhorse of a beast
Its the only knife thats threatening to take my Lil Temperance 3 K390 out of my pocket.

Thanks for reminding folks about the tradeoffs of toughness and edge retention, and how its perfectly okay to be focused on one at the expense of the other. Right tool for the right job!
Cheers!

Honor on Spyderco that he bringing Well heatreated special steels on the Market, not even one other Company does this with Steel like, 15v, 10v, Rex45, Rex121....

Well, finally someone who states the intended purpose. A knife is a cutting tool. If you need to pry, chop, bore holes or any other thing then get the right tool. Just like on my screw drivers it reads, "Not For Use As A Prybar or chisel". On my prybars it reads, "Use Safety glasses". 🤷‍♂️👍😁

Seeing how good a job Spyderco did with their Rex45 Id imagine its not _inhetently_ "chippy" but yes... SPOT ON. A knife is a cutting tool not a pry bar.

If they would make a Manix 2 with REX 121 steel, that is all black, with a silver blade, I would be begging them to take my money.

That’s all I was saying when I commented about it and you detailed it perfectly in your short here. I wouldn’t say it’s not made for hard use because it is, it’s made for hard use in slicing which is fabulous if that’s what you want in your edc blade. I don’t do a lot of cutting like that I do some cutting and slicing and then some prying and digging etc. I prefer the Esee Izula for my edc. $60 and it does everything. I sharpen it once a month or two.

"Use the right tool for the job". Thanks for helping me justify why I keep buying stuff all the time.

Thanks Jared. I just got mine, and like Shawn did with his 15V, I'm taking it to 13 dps, polished. Like all my 15V, 10V, K390, Rex45, and S90V. Collection knives, super light use. A beautiful presentation of special steels.

For whatever reason, I had more problems with chipping on s110v than I did with Rex 121. On paper I thought it should be the other way around.

Regardless - putting out blades in all of these different steels is one of the reasons I absolutely love Spyderco. Hell, their proprietary steel - SPY27 - quickly became one of my favorite steels.

Not my cup of tea, that's for sure... I tend to stick with 14C28N for it's rust prevention and toughness... yeah Edge retention is a little on the iffy side but they're super easy to sharpen... I'm also partial to Elmax too

I bought one to give it a try. But I generally only go to 15v or z-max for high edge retention because they still score a 3.5 in toughness but a 10 in edge retention. I would rather have toughness so I can lay my edge back w/o chipping

Good vid man 👍
That's about the most exotic steel you can get right there.
Past that are the carbide based blades.

It is a beautiful knife. I went with the frn version. I really like the frn! All my other spyderco knives are g10.

Absolutely 💯 agree. Getting tired of all the YouTube comments about “its chippy😢” or “its brittle” same with maxamet. Use it for its purpose that’s it. If you wanna chop done bricks or metal poles don’t buy these kinda steels.

Totally agree, about using the correct tool for the job., ...A sense of reasonableness is necessary when using your tools

Impact of any kind of blade steel may cause chipping. A lot of conditions come into play, angle of impact, the hardness of the material being impacted, the force behind the impact. I've managed to chip 1075 carbon steel and 5160 over the years. With knowledge of the limits of the blade steel, you should never have a problem.

In your opinion, what steel is a best of all worlds? Has good edge Trenton, isn’t chippy and it’s relatively easy to sharpen?
