Sony HX99: An RX100 VII on Steroids???

In this video, we look at the popular Sony HX99: Discontinued but still highly desired as it retains the RX100 series form factor, but with a much stronger zoom. Is this a camera to consider? If the crop image from RX100 Mk7 is comparable to the image captured from physical telephoto zoom on the HX99, then I would stick with RX. Such a great camera.

I really hope the RX100 VIII rumours are true. Strangely the digicam industry seems to be having a resurgence due to TikTok so having a more powerful sensor plus modern processing in a compact body seems appropriate. I'm actually hoping for them to keep the zoom (or increase it) but also improve the processing, better battery life and ofc better ergonomics. I was thinking of them getting to micro 4/3 but that's basically asking to increase the size which I'm pretty sure nobody would want 😂.

Otherwise, this does seem to be an interesting options. But the 1 inch sensor will do it for me. Just wished for either longer ranges or slightly bigger sensor size.

The sensor is too small and old to be realistically compared with a larger sensor camera like the RX100 mark7. I believe that having extra zoom but with inferior image quality does not make it "on Steroids" as the title says.

Can you help me make up my mind? I'm thinking of getting either the RX100 vii or RX10 iv for some wildlife photography. But then, wouldn't that amount of money be better spent instead on an A6400 + the 70-350 sony G lens?

My camera is broken i sent it to reapair. You forgot a big different between the older series HX66 and more to the HX90. This cameras can make only JPG files. The HX99 have the option to make RAW files. You can more correced. That is a big thing. It not so good as the RX100 M7. What will you. The price is 3 times higer. Why is there not a update from the RX100 M7? Like the eye focus on brids and anymails. This camera is more than 4 years old. Look to the A6600 a good camera but there is now the A6700.

The thing i just dont like about these point and shoot is that these collapsible lenses are prone to falling plus potential dust issues. I prefer a camcorder for video.

I have the HX-80 because I couldn't afford higher end cameras at the time, and I still use it for trips. The HX-99 has .RAW and 4k .

The markup is cause point-shoot cameras are not made no longer due to smartphones.

I am a former owner of the HX99. The rolling shutter, (jello) on the lens is terrible! And while there is a lot of contrast that is lost at the longer zoom lengths, my it can be fun to shoot with at times if you have plenty of daylight.

I had the rxvii and I didn't like it at all. The picture quality was not as good as I was expecting and night time performance was really bad.
