Self reliance | Ralph Waldo Emerson
Показать описание
How can we find self reliance? How to slow down? How to be more in touch with nature? 19th Century American philosopher Emerson gives some tips.
Dr Graham Blackbourn presents Ralph Waldo Emerson. This American philosopher was influenced by transcendentalism and became one of its leading lights. Connecting with the present moment, the power of reason, and a single universal being are all themes in his writing.
"True understanding comes through one's own searching and from intuition, rather than second- or third-hand."
Emerson was influenced by English Romanticism, German Idealism, as well as ancient Greek philosophy including Plato, Plotinus etc. But he also admired the ancient Indian texts, Bhagavad Gita, Vedas and the Upanishads which were only just becoming available in the west.
In his book 'Nature' Emerson said that nature is the most important factor in education. He also felt that education was for everyone and we should all be self-reliant. Personal freedom was paramount to him.
Transcendentalism was probably the most significant philosophical movement of 19th century America, especially in literary circles.
The transcendentalists were amongst the first environmentalists, speaking out against the growing industrialisation. 'A man cannot be happy and strong until he too lives with nature in the present above time.'
Emerson led people to think for themselves, to be self reliant, and to trust in their own instincts and experiences.
The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.
