I know this is a delicate question, but what is your budget for your first (next) camera?

I am an advanced amateur photographer who is retired from the printing industry. I used to love shooting macro photography up until the early 2000’s. Had a Nikon F 4 which I loved but then they stopped making film. I tried to get into digital I bought a D 100 back in the day and I never liked the quality of the images. Especially for enlargement. I shot wedding semi professionally part time and used 2 1/4 format Bronica cameras. So my eye is used to very sharp images grain free. Other than using my smart phone to take pictures I really haven’t done much in 15 years. A month ago or so I found your videos on YouTube and you inspired me to start again. A few weeks ago I saw an ad on Amazon for a Nikon D 3500. I decided to buy it. It came with two kit zoom lenses that was under $500 with a case. I’m an experienced retoucher in Photoshop for decades. Now I’m back at it again and have incorporated Lightroom into my process. I’ve gotten my feet wet I’m thinking about taking the plunge for the next camera. Possibly next summer. Which would you suggest? a used the750 or 810.

Love your approach! You hit it on the head when you said your first camera will probably not be your last. Therefore people need to be aware that once they commit to a camera and start buying lenses compatible with their new camera (in my case it is the Nikon f mount) they are tied to that lens mount in the future -unless they get into adaptors or sell their lenses off and start over. I went with a Nikon F mount to start with because they have a huge selection of lens available from both Nikon and third party manufactures like Tamron, Sigma, Tokina etc. In fact my wife wishes Nikon only made one lens!! :)

Class is in session!! Thanks for posting the video. I upgraded from my d3300 to the d7200 a couple of days ago. Like night and day in terms of user experience. Look forward to the next one.

I just bought a entry level full frame camera last year so i am probably not in the market for a new camera for a while. But in a few years who knows.? Refurbished cameras are also a good option. I saved some big bucks on refurbished lenses. I liked the fact you didn’t mention any manufacturers as all of the big brands make outstanding cameras.

Great to see you again with a new video. I already have a camera but your tips are always welcome. Thanks!

Excellent tips. One tip I would add ... join a photography club and consider very strongly getting the brand of camera that most of your friends have. If you are interested in growing your photography skills quickly, you WILL be depending on personal support from friends (and of course ... YOUTUBE).

Great job on presenting this first of many videos in this series. You were concise and very comprehensive. Very well thought out with sound advise. I can see how this advise could be very helpful for people.

I'm very excited and looking forward to the rest of your course. I decided to try and get into photography about a year ago and bought the entry level Canon D750. Over the year I have added a few lenses to my kit, 2 of them used. Although I'm still disappointed with my pictures I realise I have a lot to learn and I'm still enthusiastic! I know the day will come when I'm ready to upgrade but I want to be able to justify the cost to myself!
Maybe by the end of this course I will be returning to this video to spend my money...

Excellent advice for folks just getting into photography, or for anyone thinking of upgrading to better camera gear! Particularly the advice to check out the used camera market. Over the past 10 years I have purchased 4 used cameras and I've had great luck with all of them. When I decided to try my hand a full frame last year I purchased a used Nikon D700 from B&H for about 40% of what it would have cost when new. When it arrived it looked brand new and when I checked shutter actuations I discovered it had only taken 2, 200 photos...that's about how many shots I take in a busy week! I would also heartily agree that pairing a high end camera with a cheap lens is a prescription for disappointment! This is particularly true when it comes to high megapixel cameras like the Nikon D850 which greatly magnifies lens faults, camera shake, etc.

Attilio, great start and love your honest and straight opinions, we beginners need guidance so thank you.
I purchased a used D800( 7000 shutter actions) for about £500($660) and then a mint 20mm 1.8 ( as you had recommended in the past) for £400 ($530), yes I had to save to buy them and yes I traded a D5300, but that’s how it is, I know I need to spend money on good equipment now but that also means I won’t need to upgrade again, there are some great secondhand bargains out there if your next purchase will be a used 50mm, cheap as
