From The Lore of Running(Tim Noakes) you want to arrive just before you perform or two weeks early when competing at altitude...basically every team for example in the NFL does this exactly wrong going to Denver Friday afternoon...One exception was Chip Kelly when in Philly and he insisted on a Saturday flight(closer to the game start as 2 weeks before was not practical)

With iron and ferritin you also need to be careful of not getting too high also especially in males. As you said testing is important.
