G'day friends

Another technical mid week video.

We can honestly say that for 4.5 years we travelled the world in a Land Rover Defender that had no oil leaks.

Unfortunately our luck had run out and after leaving some oil spots on my parents driveway that became small puddles after a few weeks it was time to investigate.

We removed the transfer case at our good friend Jimmy's place and replaced all seals and the output shaft.

Thank you Jimmy and Mark for helping out on this big job.

Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

The best part of Landies is they come with a brotherhood. 😁

What I have learned watching you all these years is that Land Rover is for those who know mechanics, want to learn mechanics, don't mind working and spending money all the time!

I thought if it drips and leaks that is a good sign that it still has fluid? Be safe and healthy!

Yes the rubber lip seals fail over time, it's just a fact of life, I've got swivel housing kits on order as my front diff keeps overfilling with grease. Paper gaskets and no thread sealant on all bolts is a sure way to enjoy more friend time. Ashcrofts themselves recommend tossing most of the paper gaskets unless you are wanting to keep all the factory leaks.

you have some good karma to have mates like that. And yes, Landies leak like a bad faucet, but that's how we keep the rust down on everything.

"Greg's going to pull his shaft out.." Nearly spat my tea out at that! *I'm so childish* 😂

It's so nice to see a young person such as Jimmy learning a trade. Looks like he is well on his way to becoming a master. Many techs these days are only parts changers. :)

There are 2 o rings on a selector shaft that leak. The problem is the housing wears oval so replacing the orings only works for a short time . You need to machine the housing and install some bronze bushes that will last a lifetime.

My transfer box started leaking a while ago but I discovered it was because it was full of oil. Once all the oil had run out the leak stopped - problem solved!

They are leaking by design to prevent chassis rust due to salt on the road.

As the official Land Rover Dealer said to me when i arrived with a leaking transfer box at 9.800km on the clock: Not already, only just now!

Your the man Jimmy, your County is the same colour as mine. Mine is raptored with raptor decal, of cause with a 4bd1 turbo and double locked. We don't want to see you working on Toyota's or Nissan's.
