Biden's new tariffs on China explained

The tariffs will be phased in over the next three years, officials said. Those that take effect in 2024 include EVs and EV batteries, along with solar cells, syringes, needles, steel and aluminum and more. Some would not take effect until 2026.

The election-year tariffs could increase friction between the world’s two largest economies. China’s foreign ministry said in a statement that the tariffs “will seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation.”

Administration officials say they don’t expect the tariffs to significantly escalate tensions between the two counties, although China is likely to explore ways to respond to the new taxes on its products.

Great now repeal the chicken tax and get rid of the CAFE standards so it's easier to get smaller light duty vehicles and trucks.

It's protectionism and while It's not a great idea; Tariffs must be applied strategically, rather than a certain proposal to put an automatic tariff on everything from everywhere, not just China.

We have some half-assed EV's on the market with bills set to only have EV's for sale in certain states.

I think it would be great to reduce the overconsumption that America engages in. As bad as the average American has it, people working in sweatshops have it much worse. This plan wouldn't help that part though

I often buy consumer goods very very cheaply from Temu. One thing about that experience is that I feel I have the experience to say, I never ever want to buy anything electrical or important from China that costs more than $5 and that I can't instantly return straight out of the box. Most have a 3 month limit before failure. I hope China will change, and start actually producing goods that can be relied on to WORK and WORK RIGHT, AND not be toxic. But they aren't there yet or anywhere close. And China isn't transparent enough for us to hear about cases where their EV's burn up on the road... solar panels and EV's are critically important, and it is critically important that they WORK. A long time ago, Japanese tools were a joke, and then the country as a whole turned that around and Japanese tools became the best in the world. (Maybe 50 years ago, I don't know who makes reliable stuff these days, if anyone.) China needs to do that, but I don't think that is really in their value set. Innovation seems to be in their value set, so maybe quality, by being inovation, could become valued for that reason.)

How is it a regressive tax on Americans? Are Luxury items a regressive tax on rich people? Why are politicians using words so loosely in definitions? It would be regressive tax if China was the only country producing cars and the U.S. use tariffs to sell more bikes in the U.S. for it to be like a "regressive tax" to me.

They have done this before when the country had just gained independence to become less dependent on british goods, maybe this could make us a more self-sufficient country like it did all those years ago.
