That's on the production side. 8K has always had value there. Where 8K IS dead is on the retail side. No one asks about 8K there and there is zero demand for 8K TVs now at the consumer level.

I think that's the current best use of 8k, also NHK having 4K is so weird to think since in North America we pretty much just discovered 4k

8K TVs won’t be viable until real time ai upscaling gets really good for older content imo. Too much media not made for 8K. That being said I’d love to someday own an 8K tv because you can use a larger display with a shorter viewing distance for a very cinematic feel.

On the production side sure it’s been useful, but on the consumer/retail side they better work out HDR before moving on to the next resolution

High frame rate and motion clairty is more important. Motion clarity hasn't been solved and we still get 1080p with low bit rate with over the air and streaming. 8k is at the bottom of the list of whats needed for high fidelity.

Forget about 8k resolution in our displays until we get dp 2.1 and we can have proper 8k 120hz with DSC at least.

I'm hoping Sony will release a new 85 inch 8k with new processing system next year. I won't be buying it until I get could it used for a decent price in 2026 though...
