Visiting Maryland's Smith Island by Boat

Smith Island is a three-by-five-mile island chain about 12 miles west of Crisfield, MD. It is comprised of three villages: Ewell, the largest of the three, which is joined by bridge to Rhodes Point, and Tylerton, which is on a neighboring but unconnected island. You can only get here by boat, either on a private vessel or the ferry from Crisfield.

In this video, we talk with Smith Islanders about what life on the island is like, get out on the water to catch speckled trout and striped bass, and sample the local cuisine, like fresh crab cakes, oysters, and of course, Smith Island Cake.

I ate at Mrs Kitchens house when I was a kid, I’m now 59 and still remember going into her house and sitting at the table and she fed us one of the best meal I’ve ever had. Back in the early 70 s . I grew up in the summers in Deal Island and still have a house there we use on weekends and holidays. I got to dredge and cull oysters in Honga river and the Tangier Sound on the skipjack Claud W. Sommers and the Helen Virginia. Fished up soft crabs out of floats on the water with lights strung over them very early in the mornings. Packaged them in wax covered boxes to go to the buyer. Pulled pots in the summer on the workboat. It was a much better time then. I miss the older guys that are now gone. They taught me a lot of things about the water, some of which saved my life.

As a Maryland native I feel cheated for not ever visiting Smith Island.
