Toyota Supra 2021 review | the A90 is a BMW, but does that matter? | Chasing Cars

We test the updated Toyota Supra GTS 375hp and see what this sports coupe is like to drive.

It’s fair to say that Toyota could have built the A90 Supra themselves without BMW. Maybe they should have done. But either way, we’ve ended up with a powerful, turbo six-cylinder RWD coupe that has awesome grip levels, good handling and arguably very cool styling. So should the Mk 5 Supra cop this much hate?

The Toyota Supra competes primarily with the BMW M2 and forthcoming Nissan Z. Does it stack up?

One small detail that a lot of people are probably not aware of is that during engine development of this engine at the BMW factory for the Supra, Toyota engineers pulled apart 5 of these engines and packaged them up and sent them back to HQ in Japan to be tested and improved. The Japanese engineers already knew where BMW engines tend to have problems so fixed these areas and got BMW to manufacture them in this format. I'm not sure if BMW has used these improvements in their own cars but if they haven't then the engines in the Supras are probably a little more reliable. I know this cause I was working at Toyota at the time.

I have a 2019 Audi S5. I just picked up a 2022 Supra. The two cars are not comparable. Supra is a brilliant car.

First time I saw one of these in the flesh I thought what a great looking car.

As an owner of a Supra, I still get goosebumps everytime I hop into mine.

This car gets a lot of hate, for no good reason and mostly from people who have never driven one.

I'm not too sure what expectations the public had for the current Supra in terms of performance. People are quick to forget that the JZA80 actually wasn't a supercar killer when it was released. It was more of a sporty GT, we often look back at old cars with rose-tinted glasses. It was heavy, and didn't handle anywhere near as well as the NSX or GTR. Oh, and it also came in automatic too. People like to omit that fact.

Looks are subjective, and the Supra is definitely polarising. Those who love it, adore it and those that don't, hate it. Each to their own.

I think the B58 and ZF combination is awesome. The motor is an absolute gem. It's been out on the market for years now, and hasn't developed a reputation for being a lemon yet, touch wood. N54's and N55's by this stage were notorious for their issues.

People need to look beyond the badge. If you just want a nice comfortable sports car, like the JZA80 was, I'm telling you, the current generation Supra has those characteristics in spades.

The performance numbers are a bonus. This thing tested by CarExpert, has lapped Queensland raceway only a few tenths off an AMG C63 and BMW M8, despite having significantly less power. It has lapped Laguna Seca faster than a BMW M2. It does sub 8-minutes at the Nurburgring. The chassis is potent.

The Supra continues to be heavily underrated from many corners. But the numbers don't lie, and it's one of the best sports cars out there this side of 100k.

I don’t get it why people upset that interior is bmw? Bmw makes better quality interior than Toyota could ever make! And engine is decent too it’s been proven to make power like the old 2j so it’s success and worth the Supra name !

Proper video for a proper car! The Supra is underrated IMO. It's a devilishly fun vehicle. It might not be for everyone but the performance and aftermarket on the MKV Supra is amazing.

Thanks for the video, Tom. I really love the honest, informative and down to earth assessment of every vehicle you test.

Hi Tom - a great balanced objective review - on something that polarises - personally I do admire this car just because it exists - and if I had the money I'd really consider it as there is little around that competes directly against it. Well done on this review - enjoyable as ever

Bro - I just watched your video. Although my expectations were low, I appreciate the content as it was very insightful. Thanks and apologies if I seemed critical. I removed my prior comment about my expectations because the video was good.

If this was sold as a BMW Z4 Coupe everyone would love the styling and performance. It would also cost 25% more.

I had a Datsun 280zx in high school (1992) I recently bought a 2006 Nissan 350Z. I personally really like the Supra and the new Z. I live in Texas and my main issues are: 1) The roads are under constant construction. There are pot holes everywhere. 2) There are huge trucks EVERYWHERE...Raptors, RAM TRX F-150/250/350 most of which are lifted. Their headlights hit my mirrors and constantly blind me. It's horrible. I don't remember it being that bad, so trucks are getting bigger and I'm getting older. It's just something I think about. It seems like I live in a sports car hell hole and the elements are out to kill it.

Let’s hope Toyota’s tweaking gives it better reliability than a BMW!

Hey Tom, great review and also think you summary on Fridays is very useful. Just one question…….Why is the dunny in the background every video lately?

It means there's alot of Plastic Parts used in the Engine and Engine Bay Don't think you'll get past 80-100k without Major Costly Repairs Setting In for Timing Chain Guide, Water Pump Assembly & Coolant Hoses, Electric Parking Brake & Electric Power Steering

In the early nineteen sixties I purchased a new E Type Jaguar. This Supra does not seem like a car that's advanced by a further 60 years plus.

The whole point of Toyota is to avoid all the painful long term BMW repair costs I was really disappointed when I saw it at dealer brand new with already rusted rotors
