As a builder, another useful tip is to make a creative superflat world and just have fun building whatever you like!
It is both entertaining, and you will naturally become better due to building more.
Plus, you can then use that world for inspiration or to try out concepts for your survival world

Another thing that helped me is giving a lore to what I build, for istsnce survival world X has the lore that in a far century a population migrated and settleded there, the main house is made out of wood because they were poor, and then they evolved to stone and other materials.

Honestly, one big thing is remembering that you aren’t making a copy of something: you’re representing it in a new medium. Don’t get bogged down on details when you are trying to make something from real life or using a reference image. Just like pixel art, if something is sharp, exaggerate it, if it’s blunt, round it as much as you can. It’s a goofy block game, make goofy things with blocks and have fun

The "building the function later" tip is actually true, i was building a Pier like Village but i haven't transported my villagers to live there yet so it keeps me motivated to add houses, shops and more

Makes sense but one change is needed. You need an outline of the functional thing before you decorate, otherwise you will probably run out of room inside.

I used the principle in the past, in an old world I made a wither arena out thousands of blocks from spawn and decorated it like an SCP foundation facility, with a chamber for testing containment, a barracks, research office and storehouse for prisoners used in experiments.
