Hindustan Unilever’s chief Sanjiv Mehta has spent 30 years at the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) giant and he’s worried – he said has not seen inflation of this kind before and has a warning for the government. The maker of Vaseline, Kwality Wall’s ice cream and Surf Excel is worried about the rise in inflation and the ongoing volatility across the world. Hindustan Unilever (HUL) is the oldest and the largest FMCG company in India and has dozens of brands under its name – brands which have been household names for a long, long time. In other news, the monthly collection under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has peaked to an all-time high of Rs 1.68 lakh crore in April 2022, according to a statement by the Finance Ministry on May 1. In this episode of the Business Tit-Bits, our Business Editor Mr Akhilesh Bhargava shares his take on the matter.

You are right the increasing in GST collection not because of Government's effort but due to year ending sales of March 2022 as various incentive & Cash discount offered by product manufacturers.

Record GST collection during April 2022.
1. More tax is bring paid by common man.
2. Volume of consumption has not shown any growth, only less consumption.
3. Indication that price of commodities have increased.
4.Commodity prices increased because of abnormal excise duty on fuel by Union Govt during 2020, pandemic period.
5. Levying more tax on fuel during pandemic is in-human.
6. In-human because people had to spend heavily on health.
7. More Tax collection cannot be justified putting lives of citizen in trouble.
8. Citizen cannot be troubled because they make the Nation.
9. Nation is important is it not ?
Thanks for the detailed analysis of what head of HUL said.
It is not simple.
Vety nice, thank you.

One good point was because many of the product prices have also risen and tax on the product will also increase.

Hello sir . I always like your videos and updates on the Indian economy. I find the only problem in your videos is the clarity of voice. Over-all excellent work sir. Thank you for that

Very well said sir. Inflation is killing middle class, forget about poor people. Month after month our expenses are increasing. Nirmala doesn't understand the meaning of inflation effect. According to her inflation is not worrying matter. GST collection is higher due to inflation. When she will realise this I will worship Sriram.

Very well explained 👍
Very often the higher GST collection is linked to over-all improvement in economy..which may not be the case always..

Anyone know why, though the GST has been in existence for nearly 5 years, no data seems to have been released of the GSTR 3b which is known on the 21st of each month - this gives not only figures of GST paid but also input credit sought by GST payees and since the GST system is a non tax cascading one, just headline numbers each month not clearly defined [ al least to me ], so can any one enlighten everyone of these figures ????

@akhilesh bhargav the gst collection has gone up due to excessive imports and high prices in commodities particularly steel cement transportation cost which is part of invoice. Also the extent of deferred policy of allowing input tax credit that impacts gst has to be seen. If the govt wants the people to believe that gst collection increase is due to growth then they are lying. It will be a good analysis if any credible agency presents a total gst analytics sectorwise state wise and price index wise.
