Meditations by Marcus Aurelius Book Review

This is my review on one of my favourite books of all time, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius! It was the first book to open my eyes to the world of stoic philosophy. The book covers a wide range of topics in life.

The intro written by Gregory Hays is excellent as well. Hays also translated the Latin. Also, Marcus didn't really write this to be a book, he was writing a journal to himself to remind himself of basic truths to keep him sane while being emperor and having to oversee war campaigns.

My favorite Marcus quote is (paraphrased), "You are formed of three parts; body, breath and mind. The first 2 are yours in so far as they are in your care. The third is truly yours." So powerful. We own our minds outright. We must protect it, we must nourish it with goodness and actively attack negative thoughts and feelings. Marcus tells us to get active in our own rescue and do it now while we still can.

Just came in the mail today! Marcus Aurelius has some of my favorite quotes but I’ve never read meditations all the way through. Excited! Have you read Seneca’s On the Shortness of Life?

Thanks for the review. Fyi, it was originally written in Greek, not Latin (Greek being the Latin of the day). And it was written as a diary, not for publication. Hence, the lack of a coherent flow!
