Mono’s debut single from 1996, ‘Life In Mono’ is a sumptuous slice of chilled out electronica featuring a sample of John Barry’s sublime Ipcress File theme and was the lead off track from their ’97 LP Formica Blues.
The track was later covered by Spice Girl Emma Bunton and would appear on the soundtrack of the 1998 Hollywood movie version of Great Expectation. It and has been featured in commercials, TV shows and films including MTV’s 90’s animated classic Daria.
Formica Blues’ 25th anniversary this August is celebrated with a deluxe edition of the album featuring rare remixes from Matthew Herbert, Mr Scruff, Les Rhythmes Digitales (AKA Stuart Price) and the Aloof.

Lyrics
The stranger sang a theme
From someone else's dream
The leaves began to fall
And no one spoke at all
But I can't seem to recall
When you came along
Ingenue, ingenue
I just don't know what to do
The tree-lined avenue
Begins to fade from view
Drowning past regrets
In tea and cigarettes
But I can't seem to forget
When you came along
Ingenue, ingenue
I just don't know what to do
Ingenue
I just don't know what to do
Ingenue
I just don't know what to do
Ingenue
I just don't know what to do
Ingenue
I just don't know what to do
Ingenue
I just don't know what to do

Still one of my most favorite songs ever. The melancholy hapsichord and beautiful melody always takes my imagination far, far away... Dreaming about another me, living in another life, in another world, another time... Sometimes it made me smile, and sometimes it brought me to tears... 🥲🥰

A melancholic autumn song that makes you dream of looking out the window against a black and white background on a rainy day. This song is like a hidden treasure that few people know about.

I bought the Great Expectations soundtrack as soon as it was released and used to have this song on repeat, again and again. I still love it!

The perfect James Bond type style of music that has never been in any James Bond movie. Has a haunting 70's balad style with modern D&B.

I love that mix of trip hop with the 1970s pop ballad style.
90s, please come back

I remember when I saw the movie "Great Expectations" in 1998 at the cinema and heard this sublime music and fell sweetly in love with the beauty of Gwyneth Paltrow they couldn't have chosen a better song for that unforgettable movie 💘

I was 19yrs old back in 1996. How fast time flies and how some songs can bring back so beautiful memories!!!

I love the way she almost whispers this haunting song. Most singers need to be the center of attention; her ability to allow the powerful emotions of the song be the focus is what makes it so unique & fascinating.

One of the best pieces of music of all time. It's kind of mind blowing that this achieved the success it did. When Great Expectations came out and this song was everywhere for a while, this became the first non-video game non-movie song I became obsessed with as a kid. It seriously messed with me. I was 11 when promotional push for that movie was in full swing, and I just remember feeling so forlorn, broken, damaged, etc... every time I heard this song. Just a deep visceral feeling of sadness. Along with a lot of video game music in a similar vein (Castlevania, for example, ) it helped shape my musical taste; I have always loved this dark, deeply morose, baroque-heavy minor key sound. I love harpsichords, Wing upright pianos, etc... anything that gives that regal, courtly sound, my favorite chord in minor key is the V chord, etc.... and man, this song really is one of the best circle of fifths progressions of all time. I Will Survive has nothing on this.

I heard this on the radio while driving, more than 20 years ago and had to pulll over. And it STILL has the sam effect on me. "Ingenue... I just don't know what to do."
