In today's video I show how to apply for FEDERAL GOVERNMENT jobs through USAJOBS.GOV. I discuss how to narrow down job openings based on your location, closing dates, and what items to put on your resume when applying. Also, what to be on the look out for once you have submitted your application. I stress the importance of having patience when apply for government jobs. Unlike other private companies, government agencies usually will not hire you within 30-60 days from the date that you applied, it could take months before you receiving an email requesting for an interview. I hope this video was informative, please comment below and let me know your thoughts and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE!

Here’s another tip. Usually they pick from the first pool of resumes. They can reject all vets and other people if the resumes are trash. At that point they will ask HR to go to the next pool (public people) Your tentatively could turn into referred to hiring manager if this happens so don’t give up. Apply for as many as you can.

Totally agree! It is a long process with getting a govt job. I was blessed to get in through a hiring fair under Pathways. I went to the fair July 2015 and got interviewed on the spot. Rec'd a tentative offer letter in Aug 2015 along with security clearance paperwork...met with a special agent in Oct 2015 to go over my credit, background, and other questions for my security clearance and then the waiting game started....finally received a final offer letter in April 2016 asking me to start asap, but had a current job by then so after a two weeks notice and getting last min things situated, I started May 2016...so in all, it took about 9/10 months for me!!

Hi! Fyi most agencies do not scan resumes! The assessment helps us narrow it down (we don't even see resumes that don't meet minimum qualification * determined by the self assessment (all those questions u answer in the start of your application) . The resumes that are qualified we review each one...we compare the resume with the specialized experience listed in the job post... we are looking for your experience doing the work noted there...For social work, the education requirements are nonnegotiable.. this is an opm (Office of Personnel Management) requirement the "referred to the hiring manager" email means that your resume made the stack of resumes that go to the hiring official usually the person who will ultimately make the hiring selection and from there that official will pick who they want to interview. Note: social work jobs are executed service (it more of an at will hiring.... In short ) ....also depending on where/what agency u are applying the budget yr might slow down or speed up the process. The new fiscal yr in the government starts oct.1... sorry for the long long post. Okay bye!

Thanks for the video. Some great points and very helpful to new applicants.

Want to point out that tentatively qualified does not mean that there are necessarily others who are better qualified than you. Tentative qualification is just initial qualification based upon your self-appraisal or a review of your resume. Veterans et al., if passing through the first vetting step, would also receive a tentative qualification email.

In addition, you may actually want to apply to job postings that are open for 6 months+ if they are "roster" postings. For example, the IRS will post a 9 month or 12 month roster, needing 2000 seats filled. Although it may take even longer to hear back on these positions, anecdotally they are hiring more with these rosters and it's not just an attempt to bypass the public and hire internally. If they wanted to do that they would open the application to internal only/competitive/excepted service or post a direct hire announcement.

This is a great description on how long it takes to get a job within the government. I've been with the gov now 15 yrs and trying to get a fully remote, so far its been 9 months and more than 30+ applications 😅

Thank you so much for this video :) it was so helpful and cleared a lot of things up for me. I applied for a Pathways Internship in November and just received a temporary offer in early March, I totally did not know what the timeframe would be but it was so worth it! Thanks for all the advice, I'll look at it moving forward.

Good video. I know someone that got hired in 30 days for a CSR position with SSA. I was surprised the process was so quick

My experience in HR is that jobs open for only a week or two already have someone selected and they don't want to leave open too long to avoid having too many people to add to a certificate of eligible candidates. It's a waist of time keeping an announcement open for longer than two weeks when someone is already selected. They are only opening for a week just for competition

I didn't want to leave without saying thanks for your very informative breakdown of the hiring process and the most effective way to apply for Government jobs. I have watched a lot of you tube videos on this issue but none has been as clear and understandable as yours, great Job!

All of the waiting depends on the HR. Some places are fast, and I saw results in less than a month (interview).. Some are slow.. You are correct. It is a waiting game. Do, call them if they are taking long, because after you accept a position I am sure there are time constraints.

Thank you!!! I learned a few new tricks for advertising and promoting myself. I will say it is a lot harder to land a job. These tricks work. The layout..bold font to pin point.

Thank you Kimmy for this insightful video. A Federal job interests me bc it seems stable, good time off, good pay and benefits as well as doing good for our country and a change of pace from corporate world.

With all the long wait, is a government job worth the wait? Is your management good?
