Shingles is a painful condition that can occur in people who have had chickenpox in the past. The virus responsible for chickenpox, called the varicella-zoster virus, remains dormant in the body for years and may be reactivated, causing Shingles². This can lead to a painful rash and blisters typically on one side of the body, along with Shingles Disease Symptoms like fever, headache, and upset stomach³. While shingles can occur at any age, it is more common in older adults, especially those above the age of 50 years⁴.

The pain caused by shingles has been described to feel like nails piercing the body, an unbearable burning sensation, or electric shock-like pain⁵#. The pain may last for weeks or months⁶. About 90% of adults above the age of 50 years already have the virus that causes shingles⁴. 1 in 3 individuals may develop shingles in their lifetime⁴. In adults 50 years or older, vaccination can help prevent Shingles⁷.
