Ep1. (Redux) ADHD is the new BLACK

Показать описание
ADHD is the new Black is a funny (I hope) Show for Women of Color battling or managing ADHD made by a Woman of Color managing her ADHD. (most days)
You are an amazing black or brown woman, You are smart and funny and you know what to do. So why can't you just... do it? (Procrastination!!! Ahhhh)
You are smart and capable so why can't you find your keys, ever? (Awful memory, am I getting early Alzheimers?)
No, Sister, it's your ADHD Brain Fuc#ing with you.

According to ADHD.org the overall percentage of adults diagnosed with ADHD is only about four percent of the entire population. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects blacks and whites equally, and Latinos to a lesser degree:
whites: 9.8%
blacks: 9.5%
Latinos: 5.5%

But get this: from 2001 to 2010, the rate of ADHD among non-Hispanic black girls increased by ninety percent. NINETY PERCENT.
Yet, if you are a black woman/woman of color looking for other black women/WOC to relate to in the research, media, or heck, in your community images you see are usually male and usually white.

I am standing up in hopes to connect with other women of color, black, brown, red, yellow who need to see there are others like them.
There are only a few of us talking about it. Please add your voice to the conversation so we can support each other and remind ourselves that there is nothing wrong with us!
This site is to learn about the disorder (I don't care how positive you want to spin it, it's a disorder with serious life impairments) Learn tools to manage the disorder and to laugh at ourselves along the way.
C'mon Stella, get your groove on.
We have UNLIMITED potential. Now if only we could remember where we put our keys.

Undeniably,
Stacey Machelle

I found your channel because of your feature at _how to adhd._ I'm very glad I found you. While channels like _how to adhd_ surely come from heart and with best intentions, they are often relatively blind for a lot of important issues because of privilege. If you are white cis and rich, adhd symptoms hit you in another way.

If I had money, 90% of my problems would disappear and I might come in a position, where I am able to build a future, instead of just surviving and watching myself getting older, uglier and weaker. If an adhd channel/community ignores race, class, gender, etc. every message that is supposed to carry a feeling of empowerment, might comes across like conservative 'pulling yourself up by the bootstrap' bs.

I'm tired of self help communities, that only teach you how to adapt to a system, that is designed to wring you out like an orange.

Thank you for seeing me, I almost cried because I finally feel like a worthy human being? I’m not just a lazy disorganised person, there’s a reason I’ve struggled for so long and I’m just happy to start my journey to treatment and fulfil my full potential, you’re one of a pinch of black women I’ve found on here, I appreciate you. Love, light and blessings to you always Queen😭💛💛

When you said that it feels like putting traps for yourself and not trusting your own instinct, really hit home for me.

I really got emotional when you said that there was nothing wrong with me ...thankyou ❤💝

I saw you on HowToADHD! And then today I listened to the Bad Ass Women With ADHD podcast and found you had this channel. Thank you for doing this! Your story is really inspiring and similar to mine. 🙏💖

ADHD WHITE GIRL HERE. I felt this on a spiritual level. Keep it up! You’re nailing it on the head! I’m so happy to see more attention being brought to this. It’s been so prevalent in our society and yet it’s treated like some mysterious phantom that doesn’t exist.

I was diagnosed when I was 6, and I still thought there was something wrong with me. Even though my mom had it too! And my brother! I still didn’t think it affected me. Until I got on meds. And then I went off meds.

That’s when I saw the difference.

Anyway. Thank you for starting this series. I cannot wait to watch more videos and show support.

You got this!

I’m constantly telling people my mind is like an extremely busy train station and I’m the conductor or the scene of Spongebob where there’s a lot of him running around his mind while everything is on fire. I’m barely functioning day to day but people think I’m fine 🤦🏾‍♀️ no y’all I end every day filled with guilt bc I was daydreaming for 80% of it AND getting my job done somehow but also not

Thank you for sharing because I’m about to turn 30 and I can’t go on without confirmation.

NEEDED EVERY SECOND OF THIS! 💜
(sidenote: I *loved* the bar at the bottom of the screen. As a filmmaker myself, it added a deeper understanding to the experience that was shared! Maybe a smaller bar would be a happy medium for the audience?)

Thank you for this! Diagnosed at 21 here. Now aim 33 and just now seeking all the info I can get. I have spent so much money and time on “career changes” and education and starting new businesses that I eventually get bored with. So before I attempt to go back to school for something else and put myself further into debt, I think it time I really try some new ways to try to get a hold on these ADHD symptoms. I feel like I’m living with a brain the has so much potential, intelligence, creativity, but I can’t seem to grasp the simple things that would allow me to be successful at life.
So again, thank you for creating this community. I look forward to watching your videos!

I so needed to see this! I just got diagnosed 2 weeks ago at the age of 32. This diagnosis has answered so many questions already, but I know there’s still a long road ahead. Glad to know I’m not alone.

So relatable, my mom does the fake time thing and she also uses what I call urgency threats “if you don’t do this ASAP the sky will fall” to be fair I was undiagnosed a long time and without that information that was probably her best but she still does it sometimes and it drives me insane, and yes to all of the rest, thank you for doing this!!

Omg thank you so much for this video! I am a brown trans woman with ADHD, and your video series on ADHD is bringing me to mental tears cuz I finally have someone with the same skin color as me affirm my experience. And I appreciate it not coming from a doctor, because brown women and white doctors diagnosis and judgement doesnt mix well xD So thank you so much for this video, I've already subscribed and pls keep putting out more ADHD content like this!! :D :D
