At least MG is actually trying to make EVs more affordable. The other marques seem to be perfectly happy keeping EVs as unobtainium.

I am an MG ZS EV driver and am very happy with it. It is solidly made, and the owners are very happy with them. If Sandy Munro looked in the bonnet he would fall over laughing at all the waste space but in that cavern there is a very well made EV setup with lots of cast aluminium and separate cooling systems working off a radiator/fan. I am sure later bespoke EVs will be better but it is so far ahead of fossil fuel cars I am just grateful that I could get into an affordable EV early. Very few of the owners are selling them and of those many are selling to buy new MG ZS EVs.

Perhaps this will push us closer to the tipping point for sensible EV usage / market penetration (assuming the required infrastructure catches up).

I'm surprised you didn't even mention the BYD Atto3 as this is the closest competitor to the MG.
Comparitive pricing and the BYD is arguably better spec'd with a larger interior, not to mention it's built on an EV platform.
Deliveries have started in Aus so I'm looking forward to your impartial review.

Hi John, just bought my MG ZS EV in January this year, have now done nearly 5000kms, and I'm very happy with it. I drive a mix of roads, country, freeway and city on my way to work and back. 100 km round trip. The car handles the country roads with tight corners well and is quiet and relaxing to drive. A few issues but they have all been well documented, and I can live with them. Overall 7 out of 10. Cheers

I am looking forward to the MG4 to see how much that is when released in Australia

In Perth WA during Summer, a full charge shows a GOM at 370km. MG ZS EV Essence STD range. I have started doing short country trips and am still comfortable with the range…

Any reason you didn't mention the BYD Atto 3?

I own a Tesla model 3, not a member of the church of Elon just wanted a cool car that was better than my ioniq. I recently went to Melbourne and rented a mg ZSev and I have to say it’s a solid car and I highly rate it. Was very surprised

Using the car as a power bank would be perfect for tradespeople and other mobile professions

Actually when it came to Tesla, I made a considered decision to buy the Model 3 RWD. Not be cause of any weird “religion” or “Electric Jesus”. Yes it was $20, 000 more than the low end MG but it does realistically 420km not 260km. It’s a much bigger car but it’s actually a lot more efficient, despite the fact it’s about 80kg heavier. It’s handles better than any car I’ve ever owned (sure there’s some petrol cars that will be better but they actually sell for more in Australia). It has the Tesla supercharger network which makes long distance driving relatively simple. It’s faster - not that that matters to me. It has much better software and driver comfort features. It too uses LFP batteries like the 50kWh version of the MG which I prefer. It will hold it’s value better. The MG is a solid effort but it just doesn’t tick enough boxes. No one pedal driving. No regen on cruise control (big miss). Surprisingly inefficient for a fairly low powered EV. Laggy software. No heat pump. Missing safety features on the low end version like no rear cross traffic alert. A top speed on fast charge of 80kW v the Tesla @ 170kW. Only 355L of cargo space. No steering wheel reach adjustment (another big miss). Limited OTA updates (can only update infotainment system). On the positive side it has V2L. These are all facts that everyone should weigh up before buying an EV. V2L is a killer feature and it may be what sways you to the MG or BYD or Kia NiroEV. Price might dictate you go for the MG - and it would still be a better decision than an ICE vehicle.

I love your channel for many reasons. One of them is your correct pronunciation of kilometre.

Been looking forward to a review like this!!! Just backing John up on the idea of not using a generator to power up your house. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS unless you have had your house rewired for the safe use of a generator. Rewired by an electrician.

Hi John, you're videos are always the perfect balance of humour and facts. Keen to see a video on the atto 3 if you get a chance.

So John, I was formerly one of those poor saps who worked on the wires, as an arborist doing vegetation clearance of the network.
They told us that the biggest reason we'd have earths on HV lines and have LV lines bonded, was hippies (my words there) who had back-up generators powered up to their grid connected houses. And then the rarest of occurrences, an accidental re-energising of the lines by the network operator.
"One flash and you're ash"...

I suppose it would be OK for a shopping cart, so I can avoid doing a cold start in my ultimate driving machine.

And on Hyundai/Kia - they are definitely price gouging in Australia on the NiroEV and the Kona. They’re about $20, 000 more in Australia than they are in the UK. And it’s not like we don’t have a free trade agreement with South Korea. I predict they won’t sell many at that level. New players like MG and BYD are going to force them to be more reasonable. Eventually.

I actually saw a Ioniq 5 the other day when I was driving around. Probably rarer than spotting a unicorn hoofing it in work traffic!
