MG ZS EV 2023 review | Affordable Electric SUV Australia

Simone checks out the MG ZS EV, in it’s lower excite trim. It’s a full Electric vehicle that is on offer in the Australian market.

There is a single motor and battery combo that give it 130kw of power and 280Nm of torque.

The battery is 50.3 kwh which is a little smaller than we have been seeing in many of the EVs we have been reviewing but then again helps explain that price point.

Being a slightly smaller battery means the listed range is at just 320km wltp. We have found this to be pretty accurate and with our testing we were getting just over 300km of range.

This is fine if you are topping up nightly. But to get to a full charge from empty will take you over 30hrs. A 7kw charger gets to a full charge in 7- 8hrs. Fast chargers can offer charging times to 80% in under an hour.

There is Vehicle 2 Load or V2L on the MG ZS EV. An adapter on the charging point allows you can use the car to emit its stored energy and power your devices.

A handy feature not available on many EVs.- charging station

Pricing for this entry excite model starts from only $44,990 driveaway and for the top-of-the-line essence driveaway pricing starts at $48,990.

Have had this vehicle for 3 weeks. This vehicle suits me as a no-frills taxi-parent without the screaming desire to be a show pony. 300km of range means charging twice a week whilst doing my evening grocery shop. It saves me about $700-$800 a year in fuel for my use-case, which is 5 days a week 20km a day drive to drop of the kids at their primary and secondary school. More savings if I were to also include my drive once a week drive into the big smoke to work in the office!

The speed is ~8 sec from 0-100km/h or ~5 sec from 0-50km/h (which is enough grunt to comfortably take off when I need to speedily drop of late kids to school)! As the lovely host said, very functional range and spec and I would also add 'amazing value for the technology and savings'. I have not installed home charger but haven't ever had the battery dropped below 30% which translates to about 100km range for the average driver (e.g. non speeding fine repeat "customer" or lead-footer). Hope that helps others, especially taxi parents.

I ordered the ZS (UK) last march. 10 - 12 week delivery. It finally arrived at the port 2 weeks ago, still yet to be released. MG's communication & delivery is appalling at best. I was offered the MG4 as an alternative for quicker delivery last October, really fabulous drive. Way better than the VW ID3 but a little small for my needs. (watch out for the wide sills when you get them) again the long range version that was supposedly available in 6-8 weeks. Those first orders arrived on the same ship as my car...

The KERS switch in that group of switches below the infotainment buttons, is supposed to allow you to change the regen level, from what I've seen in other reviews.

I've had mine in the UK now for over a year. Getting 8.8 miles per kwh.

I very much enjoyed your review of the MG EV. However. You said that you turned off the LKA AFTER it had crossed the Lane. Isn't LKA supposed to WARN and ASSIST to KEEP the driver's car, IN the lane? The LKA as essentially trying to keep you on the straight and narrow. I am thinking of buying an EV in coming months, and can live with short range. As a second car, we only need an EV as a local shopping vehicle . 🙂🙂

My 7kwh charger will charge my 51kw batteries in 5 hours. Will run for 3 weeks locally.

I am looking forward to MG4 and BYD Dolphin/Atto2. I am sad that BYD Seagull is not coming to Australia. It would be an ideal 2nd family car (for metro commute).

In India, this is a premium product lol

Notice that this electric vehicle (EV) does not regenerate power when the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is on, so it will rely on using the brakes downhill. This is the most inefficient and potentially dangerous method of maintaining speed.

I'ld like to see the Volvo EX30 reviewed when it comes to Australia. Really enjoyed the review on the MG ZS, also looking forward to seeing the MG4 review. Thanks

Fast charging super slow (that's the MG's fault for the maximum kw charging speed capacity) and such a short range. FORGET IT.

The MG4 is getting good reviews in the UK.
I hope it will be priced to make it affordable in Australia. The ride and handling are good. The area that needs improvement is the software. It is a little buggy.

Not having a spare tyre is a bit odd 😮
