Being a diesel mechanic I know exactly what Paul means. Over time doing repairs and how much more time certain things take under the hood on the V8 diesel compared to the simple inline 6. A six pack of injectors on the Cummins that will take 4-6 hrs to do turn into a weekend job on the Duramax. There's no way over hundreds of thousands of miles will that Duramax be as profitable.

I’ve owned all three Ford, Chevy and Ram. They all have their pros and cons but the overwhelming majority of the problems are either maintenance related or emissions related. When the government got involved they all went to crap, I wish we could sue to get rid of their involvement with the production of these vehicles . The government should not have the authority to regulate industries to the point where the vehicles are prone to failure directly from government forced emissions equipment.

Exhaust brake is by far better on the Cummins which saves on brake pads.

Thank you for what you do. I am just a casual diesel truck owner and have owned a 97 Dodge with the 5.9, 03 GMC with duramax, and now a 12 RAM with 6.7 with 175k on it.They were all good trucks that I maintained and towed an RV with regularly. I have considered going back to a duramax for comfort and I like the looks but all your information helps me decide. Keep it up.

I hotshot everyday with a duramax. 2015 almost 400k and 2013 with 285k loaded right now. 08 with 600k never a major issue

I own an auto repair shop and work on a lot of the big 3 Cummins, Duramax and Powerstroke. I strongly disagree with it being 3x the cost. Both fords and rams have 2 fuel filters to be changed while the Duramax has 1 (that right there is $70-$80 cheaper in parts, they both hold 3-4 quarts more oil then a Duramax, I’ve replaced more Cummins turbos then anything on a Duramax, I see a lot more emissions issues, ball joint failures and blend door issues on dodges and not to mention the brakes on a Duramax will last 3x as long then both fords and dodges. I recommend Duramax diesel trucks all day long to my customers based off the fact that they are the cheapest to maintain. Did you factor transmission replacements, turbo failures and general maintenance when considering they are 3x the cost to maintain? While you may be right (an exhaust manifold replacement Cummins vs Duramax may be more) that’s one part that very rarely fails if ever on a Duramax. I highly doubt you had to actually replace manifolds on an L5P…

You don’t need to worry about servicing the EGR on the Duramax if you don’t have one 😉

Cummins: Better fuel economy while towing, fractional amount of moving parts vs competitors, cheaper for labor/parts, more usable torque range for towing, way better exhaust brake saving on brakes, overall engine longevity especially when taken care of.

It's a no brainer for folks who are deciding which platform to build a hot shot/business up with out of ford/chev and dodge.

Don't get me wrong for a personal "fun" daily driver, haul the camper once in a while ford and chev are great. However for work, leave that to the inline 6.

I’ll be very biased here, but I drive almost solely fleet stuff. My personal is a 2022 3500 HO. I can’t trust Chevy anymore man, they rust faster, fall apart faster, I really gave my last one the college try and all the things they complained about Rams in the 90s and 2000s is everything I’ll complain about with Chevy for the last 20 years, Chevy died in 2002 for me. Even the interior seat bolts were rusty within a year on my 15. I know I’m a miracle worker here, but I’ve never replaced a Mopar transmission. Only ever been GM. The 2021 f550 I had was a very stout, very tough truck, BUT, it had a bunch of bugs and though they could be worked out maybe, I stuck with a Ram because I like not having to mess with anything. If you want to be showy, get a Chevy, people love them. If you’re going to be fast, no contest get a Ford. If you’re going to do work, Get a Ram. Chevy paint sucked even on the high end models, the new Ford aluminum shows wear very quickly with the base model paints, Ram could use more clear coat but it seems to be a more durable paint and actually shines back up once you wash it off.

More quality is put in Ford and Ram, than Chevy, Chevy really needs to get their act together, it’s not even close anymore. And this is putting my money where my mouth is talking now. Chevy put me way upside down on this Ram loan because of how atrocious that decision was when I bought it. But again, putting my money where my mouth is, I bought the Ram with confidence. The bank just beat the shit out of me because I trusted Chevy.

One more thing, the 10 speed is what did me in on the 21 f550. It was getting VERY hot. Nearly 300f in the city, and that was towing nothing but the utility bed it had on it.

Love to see some comparative actual numbers and spreadsheets. Just not buying there is that significant of a difference let alone 3x as much. I cannot help but wonder why your trucks seem to be breaking so much.

My Yellow 05 Ram 2500 QC 4x4 with Cummins and NV5600 just turned 123, 000 this weekend on my camping trip. Going to keep another 15 years as it's just broke the better Baldwin fuel filter and they last a long long time without expensive repairs.

I’m a GM gasser lover . I recently bought a 3 gen Cummins . I hate the front ends. I got it for the engine
Is it really worth rebuilding the rest of the truck just to have a reliable truck !?

Found a ram new 2022 diesel 2500 4x4 short bed for a great deal or should I wait for a 2023. I am a commercial vehicle appraiser and I currently drive a 2022 Ram 4x4 short bed Gas. I find my self Idling 3 hours at a time estimating tractor trailer and others. So I wanted to go to a diesel. Hearing all I have on the 6.4 and now the 2022 6.7 issues what do you recommend.

Thanks

Definitely not worth it if it's three times more expensive. Great video paul👍

Have you had any issues with the grid heater bolt failing on the 6.7s

what you going to do when the manufacturer stops making the diesel trucks? have you looked into the electric stuff at all or any alternates to the Cummins? Just curious when the EPA cracking down and the cancer CA laws spreading to other states outlawing the use of diesel trucks.

So why does the Cummins cost almost the same as the Duramax?
