I've always struggled to find a good video about how to take care of string replacement... this one is absolutely top-notch!

I suffered for years (literally) until someone showed me how to perform this string locking trick. Yes, it does work great for acoustic and electric alike, and use it on all strings, wound and unwound. It may get a little confusing on a 3X3 headstock, because when you move to the 3 tuners on the "bottom" of the hdstock, you have to change your thinking a bit. Just always remember, bring the end of the string under and toward the CENTER of the headstk, then bend it over and lock it in.

John, thanks much for putting up your video. It was the first time I ever restrung any guitar and your information, presentation, technique and experience was just thing I needed for the confidence to do it. Your lock system worked great. I brought the 3 high strings into the center as you never said which direction to bend them in. But it worked. Thanks again

I've restrung my Rickenbacker 360/12 several times. First time, 2 and a half hours and a couple of shots of vodka. Best time; 1 hour and a half. I bought a Epiphone ES 335 and restrung it in about 10 to 15 minutes. It's the easiest guitar I ever had to restring. Just broke a string earlier today. Took less than 2 minutes to replace it. I do sometimes enjoy seeing how fast I can restring the Rick 12. It's like a competition with myself.

When changing from 9 G Elixirs to 10 G on my Gibson LP, will I have to slightly modify the slots in the nut for the extra gauge string?

Thats quite the twist you put on it. Might try that on my Epi, I have those double hole tuners on my strat where you twist it all around. Looks crazy but i pick it up after a week or so of not playing it and its still right in tune. Epi not so good. Need to do something to it
Edited.. I have gotten in down now an it makes a world of difference, even on my cheap guitars with not so great tuners it holds tune. Only tough part is the B an E, takes some pressure and practice but it is worth trying to learn the technique!

Instead of raising the stop tail, just do a wrap over to reduce the string break angle. The wrapover method also eliminates scratching the guitar body. Just feed the string away from the neck, anchor the ball end and wrap the string over and to the saddle, nut & tuning peg. With either method, it would be smarter to place a bath towel over the back end of the body. That way the bath towel protects the finish.
