Your commentary is so spot on, from the plastic waste to the nonesense skin care routine. Love this channel so much for that

I’m convinced the “clean girl” routine is just a rebranding of “overconsumption but make it aesthetic”

I appreciate so much you calling out single use frivolousness.

I used to use single use cotton swaps and changed to washable ones. Love em. Also I don't waste money on needing to buy new ones when It runs out. I don't understand why people do long skincare. I use 4 products during the night and 4 during the day. Not counting sunscreen. It keeps my face relatively clean and free of pimples.

Okay, while overconsumption is definitely a problem with some beauty influencers, I do have to question things he views as "single use" as someone with cosmetology degree:

1) That is a face mask where she mixed the serum in, so obviously completely difficult than just using serum. Lot of packages like that are nowdays fully biodegradable (of course, this does depend on the brand). It can also be lot more environmental friendly as you get to use the product fully, unlike with most of face masks packaged in tubes where you often have to cut open the tube to get to the last bits of the product out (which often is still more than enough for multiple usages, but it will end up drying into the tube now that it has come in contact with oxygen).

2) Those sponges are not single use! If you are in a salon setting, it might be better to not use same sponges on multiple clients, but at home it is completely fine to reuse them! Those sponges can also last for quite awhile if washed properly. I also repurpose mine as cleaning sponges once I don't trust them on my face anymore. There are also fully biodegradable sponges like that nowadays

3) Those little spatulas are not single use! Some products come with them so you don't stick your fingers into the product, making it lot more hygienic. The spatula is meant to last until the product is completely empty and I know many (myself included) who reuse them for other products, because they are easy to wash and reuse

I loved this video not so much because of what she was doing, but because of your honest, frank commentary and expertise. In the world of mass consumption, overpriced products that really aren’t beneficial, and playing oh just not knowing how to actually care for your body inside and out. It was refreshing to hear this❤❤

thank you for pointing out the huge overconsumption and capitalistic parts of these trends, my sisters love skincare and makeup but it's so expensive for mostly plastic

OK, so the little plastic applicator actually isn’t single use. I use them for all sorts of lotions and masks. It helps me measure out how much i am using. And while i agree with the single use sponges. I have heard others say it’s more sanitary. I rather just use a wash cloth my self but if thats the information they have been given it makes sense why they would use it.

When you have a derm saying you don’t need single use anything, you know the skincare companies have gone too far. I’ve been using a clean wash cloth to cleanse my face for over 50 years, and I’m proof you don’t need single use face towels, sponges or anything. How did we get to being so wasteful.
