I have never tried to catch the arm on a punch but if the punch is taken back to guard as fast as it came, there is no way I can catch it.

I don't think you generated all that much force on the backhand. Maybe you should just rotate your hips and drop your upper body and break his arm. That elbow likes to bend backwards if you put enough force behind it.

Let's not forget, bunkai can vary depending on the type of attack. The size and weight of the attacker and defender. There is some good work out there interpreting what kata can be used for. Unfortunately it seems the real meaning of kata techniques were diluted to enable the introduction and distribution of kata on mainland Japan. I'm lead to believe this was started by Funakoshi. And only in recent decades it appears that more research and experimentation is exploring what was actually intended for the bunkai. I'm no Patrick McCarthy or karate nerd. But we shouldn't really criticise what others are sharing. Especially if you're not sharing another option.

Im not going to say that this isn't going to work but it's simply just not what you're going to do when you're panicking but im saying that just moving to the side and doing a hook or any punch would be easier to think of and yes this can work its not the best thing to do or is it the first thing that comes to head when the guy you're fighting is doing a jab, this is still better than any street fighting bs or fake martial arts. I love Karate and i love your content, plus the best thing to do in a street fight is to run :)
