Once you get a grasp of your karate skills, study for a year or two with Aikido or ju-jutsu on a part time basis. You will see the katas in a different light. They are close quarter combat, up close and personal. Lots of grappling followed with a strike.

I'm sure I've practiced an ITF TKD form possibly named Won-hyo, which is too similar to this kata. It's known TKD forms are based on karate, but I never saw the resemblance so obvious.
