ok I figured it out. to anyone who has the non plumbing version, u have to fill up the water supply tank in the fridge and that will be your cold water when u use it from the door.

Just pressing the water button doesn’t light it up - I have to press the cubed first - twice - then it moves to water. The same to get the ice button to light.
