Star Trek's Most Groundbreaking Moments

Before Sulu came out as gay in 'Beyond', Star Trek had a long tradition of progressive social politics. From the diverse cast of 'The Original Series', to the intellectual plots of 'The Next Generation', Trek has broken more than its fair share of boundaries. Known for the first interracial kiss on television, Star Trek also featured one of the first lesbian kisses on TV in the 'Deep Space Nine' episode Rejoined. Jadzia Dax was also the only longrunning LGBT character until Sulu — Dax was attracted to both men and women, and as a Trill their gender was fluid. But it's not all about sexuality: DS9 also tackled racism within journalism and police brutality, while TNG often explored topics such as slavery and oppression.
