Southgate has missed so many opportunities, he has been blessed by having some of the finest players available for selection, yet has misused, ignored, mis-coached, or otherwise squandered their talent. He was a very poor league team manager, and I believe it was only his friendship with the owner that kept him employed at Middlesbrough, and despite having one of the best players in the game in Junhino still failed to win anything. He may be a very nice chap, but that does not win football matches.

I think people are looking at the from the wrong end of the telescope - the problem isn’t with the players in the current team - it started with the squad Southgate selected and it goes back even further than that - it goes back to Southgate ignoring the single biggest problem he has had for ages and that is left back - everyone has been focused on our weakness at CH but if you look at left back we literally only have one natural left footed defender in the squad who can play left back and he was injured from the get go - this was always a car crash waiting to happen - a well balanced squad needs to have a player for every position and cover for that position too - Southgate has started the competition with the sort of problem you might get towards the end if you progress that far and get injuries - and he has known about this weakness for ages - but he ignored it - he should have been giving chances for other full backs to at the very least cover at left back but that never happened and there are players worth looking at such as Mitchell at Crystal Palace - combine this basic mistake with a failure to play players in their best positions and what do you get? - two right footed players playing on the left - three of our players (Trippier Rice and Foden) playing out of their best position - full backs who have clearly been told not to attack and as a consequence of this buffoonery no service whatsoever for Kane up front - this pretty much all comes back to the cock up made at left back but it’s the forwards who are getting the blame - yet they have been totally hung out to dry
