Feeling Too Lazy To Code?

Hey guys, this is a policy I developed quite recently actually! After work I would get super drained, and never have it in me to do anything.

Lots of love as always

Schedules have literally never worked for me lol

most important imo:
1. do it every day
2. eliminate distractions (everything and for real, no cheating)
3. accept that it's going to be two hours so better have fun

Remember that "wasting time" isn't bad. Doing what you like is beneficial for your health. The problem is when you know you have to do something but procrastinate and end up doing nothing.

I'm currently in a season of more stress due to college projects pilling up and the delivery dates nearby, I've been coding for 25 days in a row now, multiple projects at the same time, we can do this gang!

I am 17 rn, started game dev a few months ago, when I was starting there was a mobile game I was playing a lot those days, so I set my goal that day to make a copy of that game, I was able to do that today :) it's not some fancy AA AAA type shit but it matters a lot to me :)

What's working for me is waking up and then going coding, no ifs or buts, even if I don't want to, but it is only on stuff I really want and for as long as I want, I don't force myself with boring stuff or force myself to keep coding for more than I want.

My rule is I just have to code, can't be a passive thing like reading an article or watching a video, I have to actually write code

Also I started a resolution to code 7 days a week, probably will fail eventually, but my goal is to write code everyday, not just week days

your ability to articulate how I feel on a regular basis is commendable. Appreciate your efforts!

I do this since about 12 years, and it works great for me. I call things I want to do "actions". Can be anything, things to complete, going for a swim, phone call, whatever I feel is important. It's not so much about assigning time or planning, more about getting things done. Sometimes I switch "actions" during the day for practical reasons, as long as it doesn't lead to doing less. The only other thing I do in addition to this is ending my day with a short list of actions for the next day. Else I end up wasting an hour or so in the morning figuring out the "actions" for the day, while at the end of the day it's usually clear what's next based on what I have done that day.

Man you're an absolute legend. 2023 was one of the worst years of my life. I am battling porn addiction and it's affected my whole life. Including how I code. I couldn't find that motivation I always had. It's 2024 and the year is off to another bad start and I am constantly fighting. Your videos are the most direct and straightforward advice one can ever ask. Thanks a lot man

People often ask me how to become a programmer and I always tell them to be consistent, I'll just start sending them links to your video haha. No joke best advice on the internet. Bravo 👏👌

being a student, sometimes having no mentor drains all the motivation when i need to talk to somebody .

A funny thing, when I was working full time and I only had 1 hour to code per day, I'd actually look forward to it and would have a lot of fun learning to code. The sessions were really productive and I always wanted to come back for more.

I decided to quit my job and start learning to code full time, I told myself I'd study 6 hours a day. On the second day I was not having fun anymore and almost lost interest completely. For me sporadic low dose learning in a high frequency works much better. Luckily I managed to up my studying time while also keeping this "novelty factor" to keep things interesting.

The image of the stairs quoting the importance of small steps is actually very impactfull 👏👏👏

Honestly, this is a much better tip than most productivity "gurus" can come up with.

i have been coding consistently on CodeWars since last 2 weeks. Went from 8kyu to 6kyu in a matter of days. Coding has never been this fun. The amount of adrenaline boost I get after solving a challenging problem is good.

I'm not a coder, but a copywriter, and I like watching all of your videos. It's still the same whether your programming people or programming computers.

There is one important thing I learned from a Youtuber (not related to coding) but that's something I have always kept in my mind since I heard it:

Sometimes you don't do things out of "motivation" or because they are fun... You do them because YOU HAVE TO DO THEM.

I do not code and learn CS because "I like it" (although I do), I do it because I HAVE TO HAVE A FCKNG PROFESSION. Otherwise I know I am going down a path that will not lead me to a happy life (and please note: money is not everything in life). But I know that I need a career in order to achieve many of the things I aspire to achieve. With this in mind, I just keep going, one day after the other, and I WILL GET THERE.

Blocking out tasks clicks for me when it comes to work, but after that the gloves are off. Between going to the gym, making dinner and taking time to tend to my mental health it's a real challenge to be uber strict once clocking off. Developing a low pressure goal for yourself is 100% the way to go. Put up some bumpers and allow yourself to hit that target you set out for yourself.
