The UK has an advantage in being a small country with a behemoth to conquer. Our (successful) colonial past gives us an advantage, the French don't have giant mega France to conquer.

I say lets enjoy our bands no matter where they originate from.

The Americas may have Elvis, Motown and Buddy Holly. But without we Brits. Who knows direction music would have went. The Beatles changed the whole shape of music and those UK artists that followed expanded it. The Stones, Pink Floyd, The BeeGees, The Kinks, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Elton John. Plus countless others from Great Britain. Go Google it. Why id be typing forever if I were to name evey British recording artists. British influence cannot be denied.

You have to look at what was happening in the US too. The rock and roll had gone very formula via tin pan alley type writing and the originals were starting to run out of steam. The Beatles were fresh and free from the tin pan alley type influences. British and American music always mirrors each other too so can be relatable but how the others interpret the music is often different enough to put an entirely different spin on it.

British artist rule the charts due in fact to their ability to change their apperance and their willingness to adopt a different persona. (Check out David Bowie) Due in part to their idea to change what their critic thought the band was successful. Pink Floyd, David Bowie, the Who and other acts expanded their musical abilities and their ability to appeal to the masses. Check out the sound of Savoy Brown, Bad Company, ect. Remember Fleetwood Mac was actually founded by a drummer, a bass play, and a guitarist from the UK. America answered with the Beach Boys.(a very underrated band). Music will always survive the turmoil of the world. In music you can always find an artist you can relate to. Somebody who touches your soul and heart. Keep listening people. Soon you'll find the one artist or band who is what you were looking for.

I’m from USA and I agree. We have great rock bands but Britain has the best. 4 of my 5 favorite bands are The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and The Clash all from the UK. Nirvana is my US band.

Not bad, but if you are doing a history lesson and omit bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and The Who, you haven't really done your homework properly, have you...?

They listened to Black music more than the white kids IN America, who were too busy being bigots because their parents told them to. But let's not kid ourselves, without their need to imitate Black American artists in just about every genre that has come along in the past 100 years, there is no British rock. Period. And that includes The Beatles.

Only in the 70s, and still not better than American bands at the time aside from popularity. America outperformed Great Britain at rock music every other decade like in the 50s, 60s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, ...etc.
