Honestly when I read the latter half of that verse where it says: “for it is God who is at work in you, to will and to work His good pleasure”, that became my comfort. I do know that there are many works based and responsibility driven Christians, but as you said we often insert ourselves and our thinking into verses instead of letting the scripture speak to our minds and hearts through context and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will never contradict the word of God, but our thinking sure will at times.

Any Christian who walks around in fear, doesn't trust God.
God is faithful, trustworthy, faithful and reliable.

Paul is clearly talking about fallowing Gods instruction ( Torah) with the spirit ( Jesus). The light( Torah )is a lamp (Jesus)unto my feet.Without works faith is dead.Belief is an action word.they were in jeopardy, just as we all are in fallowing pagan ways if we don’t fallow Torah with the spirit, that look on the outside good, but inwards destruction .fallowing gods instructions ( Torah) with the spirit Jesus, this is the only way for salvation. Itis a narrow gate, when shepherds put their sheep away at night the shepherd would stay at the gates always watching for the wolf.this is what Jesus was referring to to with the analogy of him being the shepherd and we are the sheep.after all if works ( gods instructions or law or in Hebrew Torah)mean nothing ( and they clearly don’t mean anything without the spirit ( Jesus) then why would he need to die on the cross for our sins which is a work also ( works of the wicked).Jesus came not to abolish the law but to fulfill it.the law is known in Hebrew and to all the people then when Jesus lived and did miracles which are also a work as Torah.

I would recommend removing the intro... it's just long and weird.

Also... most people I know think that the phrase means we decide what our own personal convictions/life choices instead of the church or a pastor, but then I grew up in a high control church so that is probably why.

I think of working out your salvation in a few ways...like working OUT ...like baptism being an OUTward sign of an inward change...the One that does a good work IN YOU...wants that work to flow to the outside of you as well.

If we want to repair from the damage caused by our sins we need to follow Jesus Christ, accurately. As yet, it's not for us to know that the burden of gravity impales us upon our own torture stake...our own spine...or that prayer offers a quantum mechanical link to our genetics, and cell replication processes. We know these things by faith that Jesus died a meaningful death to show us things too advanced for us, but will support us when we need it most...and we will need it most on Judgement Day. Righteousness is the code to unravelling our broken health.
