I strongly believe the Industry Plant term should only be applied to artists whose entire public image and musical style is artificially shaped to fit current trends, like Baby Goth.

i think people would be surprised just how IMPORTANT connections are. it's almost impossible to get to that high of a level without some help/getting noticed along the way.
the term "industry plant" should definitely be retired cause almost every artist would be considered one. it's just how the music industry works.

Ice Spice dad was an underground rapper. Once I found that out, it all made sense. I dont think she a "plant" but she obviously got connections. Nothing wrong with it though. At the end of the day, you either got it or you don't.

Ice spice was making music like 2 years before she blew up. Once she made Munch the labels were breaking down her doors. She’s an industry plant but not in the same way as a Jumex or Baby Goth

I think some great video ideas would be “Artists that blew up off tiktok” or “Artists with the most organic growth” those both would be really interesting

In Billie's case, her brother had already done it before so it was easy for her to create music with his help and then leave everything to her brother/dad/mom. When you have talent and connections, it's an easy ride.

I saw Clairo when pretty girl first popped off. She performed at a concert that Tyler put on in pomona (the name escapes me) . She performed with a laptop and no band . It was endearing . I was happy for her success

I like how everyone wants to hate on industry plants, but won’t support independent artists😂

You forgot to mention Drake, the biggest industry plant

Surprised you didn’t mention Don Toliver, he was absolutely nobody and then suddenly he was on astroworld and signed to cactus jack overnight

Fitting definition for Industry Plant: someone the corporate music industry grabs, turns into a specific character, for the sole aspect of making said label money. A "fake" artist. By that definition, there are lots of very shady people in a position of being called an "artist" when in reality they are just a bot for the label. Came outta nowhere and suddenly massive. 🤷‍♂️

You don't get two songs with Nicki Minaj and another with Taylor Swift IN HALF A YEAR without connections.

I’m so happy that Dro Kenji finally getting the recognition he deserved. I’ve been listening to him for about a year and just fell in love with his music

The thing with ice spice is I see genuine love for her music on the internet a lot. There’s other artists that are huge but don’t seem to have a big following or anyone obsessed with their music

I feel like "Industry plant" is one of those things where one person said it and everyone else was just like "oh it's a bad thing" without knowing what it actually means or without considering how literally every industry works. Having connections is useful in all walks of life, including in the music industry. Being marketable is also useful for the industry because generally the people who are paying to make your records then want your records to sell so they can get their money back.
Shocking.

I always found a lot of artist back stories suspicious. They'll claim how they did it all themselves and were so poor they couldn't even afford food yet somehow put out studio quality records before they even have a career.

Having done some production and worked with studios a bit I can tell you that is very expensive to have the equipment and the know how to make any track polished.

Usually at most an "organic" come up is from someone who had the tools or connects to record or were doing live shows and got enough buzz for a label to sign them.

And that's ok to have needed help from those who have the resources to help you, I don't know why we need to pretend that it's not a necessity of the industry.

You can still be great and used it, some of the biggest artists were open about it; Biggie had Diddy, Eminem had Dr Dre, etc.

I also really like Iann Dior for a while. I have stopped listening to him so much now but it is a relief to know that other people like him to so hopefully I don’t have a completely bad music taste

Awesome video matty! I agree that the term "Industry plant" is a little too broad to hold weight. I think the correct definition of IP is someone who has little or no latent talent being picked up by a label and then "made" into a revenue generator. Like all the Lil Pump clones who for the most part are just kids who are told to dye their hair, get some face tats and some wasted designer thrown on them to generate clicks and spotify listens. If the talent is there, you can't truly be considered an IP, you were just given the connections that you needed!

imo, its weird how people will make being an industry plant seem like its a lot more worse than what it actually it is. e.g like clairo, she just happened to have connections to the music industry through one of her family members and used that to her advantage, plus she was talented too and appealed to a lot of people. people be making it seem worse than it actually is, if an opportunity which enabled you to get to where you wanted to get to quicker in life (if it was a career you were passionate about) got presented to you, wouldn't you take that opportunity? i kinda compare this to e.g your mom or dad knowing people in the healthcare industry that could get you a job in that industry a lot more quicker. a bag is a bag, we all gotta sustain an income, and also, artists like jumex had the same treatment and completley flopped and became irrelevant. so it rly isn't just the industry, its also about the artist (their music, brand, image, likability etc...)
