Thank you for the scorekeeping lesson and appreciate the old school fantasy lineup. Nails, Schmidt, Mr. Padre and Benito is a plus for a Phillies/Padres fan.

My Grandpa has scorebooks from 12 years ago! We go to the Buffalo Bisons baseball games all the time and he showed me how to keep score.

While coaching, I have seen so many crazy things that I couldn't believe happened and that were very difficult to score. So that I didn't have to do it, I have taught several people to do it all they way from 8U baseball on up to 14U. What I remind my scorer is that there will be several plays over the course of a season where you will see things that you will never see again. For those, don't worry so much, just do your best. For the routine plays, over time, you will learn how to score them, and eventually the routine stuff will be easy. The most important thing though is if you are not sure, ask the umpire if the run counted. If there is one thing that you need to get right it, is the score. Good luck!!

This is a great how to video. Thorough enough to help someone be successful.

I have a question.. so what if all players had a turn to hit now we start back to the first player again. How does that play out if it's still in the same inning?

I have to be the scorekeeper for my brother's team so this is helpful, thanks. Also what would you do if the order repeats itself?

Scorebook should tell a story. We would keep track of balls, strikes, and fouls, direction of hits (we usually drew a line where ball was hit), and RBIs. At the end of an inning we would draw two diagonal lines in the corner to denote last hitter, and then switch over to next inning. We kept a separate sheet to track number of pitches.

Nicely done. I always used a frontward "K" for struck out looking and a backward one for struck out swinging.

I truly appreciate this!! I know baseball very well so I volunteered last minute for my local league who needed someone. I would’ve been so lost just looking at this paper….

I LOVE the ball players names! I mean, not enough Giants on there, so that is disappointing. But you did get Benito Santiago!

Thanks a bunch for the video! I'm headed to Spring Training in a few weeks and want to pick up scorekeeping this season, so this was extremely helpful. Also I appreciate the absolutely insane lineup.

So helpful thanks. Kids entering 10u and I haven’t been a baseball mom since he was 5 and I vowed to never do it again. Now he’s older here I am again

Great start for learning to keep score. Must emphasize that this is extremely basic and perfectly fine for anything below Little League. By 12U (middle school) and certainly by high school, your scorekeeping skills must include much more than is shown here. Understanding and covering things like Reach on Error (ROE), reaching on Fielders Choice (FC), pitch count, stolen base/caught stealing, and more, is critical for being able to present meaningful team and player stats. By high school, your technique should be thorough enough to allow you to accurately and easily feed your results into the Max Preps reporting system. Use of Max Preps for game reporting is required for official high school scorekeeping in many states.
