Congress members are elected to represent and protect the interests of their constituents.

By applauding, Congress members are implicitly agreeing with or condoning a derogatory statement about their own constituents.

Applauding a foreign leader’s derogatory remarks about their own people is a sign of subservience, undermines authority and standing both domestically and internationally.
