"I cant tell you to cancel...but..." got me 😅

Would be super funny if ATC was passive aggressive about it like "We were just discussing here how interesting it is when sometimes pilots cancel IFR and actually get there quicker"

"Grumman 84-Uniform IFR cancellation received. Squawk 1200. Will be vectoring you out of the airspace. Remain clear of the Class C... Gotta ya!" LOL

Imagine if all communication in life was as unambiguous and cooperative as that between a pilot and the tower.

ATC: "Sir, next time you want to land at Palm Beach International I suggest you buy an economy class ticket."

It’s hard for the controllers to deal with airplanes that are barely moving. Easier to cancel as soon as you see the airport. Props for filing, it makes people better pilots

Wow! Bruno, this is what small IFR aircraft have to put up with at larger airports. We're just not fast enough for them!

This is nice. Good communication with the tower and experienced pilot.

Ahhhh hey homie. You were just at my favorite airport. A Recommendation you might want to heed.

KEEP CODE FOR FLIGHT FOLLOWING!!!

POTUS has a house a few miles from there and PTFRs can pop up quick.

Love ya bro, tailwinds!!!

As I understand it, the reason you were able to get in a lot faster on VFR was so that you could bypass the ILS approach. Not necessarily a cheat code unless you're just flying GA; and even then, many Class C and Class B airports still want as much traffic IFR as possible for sequencing purposes.

I'm not a pilot but was a passenger in a 152 lined up for a straight in landing at Addison airport with my friend at the controls. ATC notified us that a King Air was approaching the airport at a much higher rate of speed and we were asked to make best speed and land immediately. I dont know what VNE is on a Cessna 152 but we were already going as fast as that little crate would go. It was exciting and terrifying at the same time.

I think I could fly a plane, but dealing with the radio is something I dont think I couldn deal with.

Australia handles this different and found it easier to fly IFR here then in the US (admitably only flown a couple times in the US), a Visual Approach is a type of IFR procedure here so they'll tell you to join the pattern/circuit or straight in visually.

Theory is here they still want you to have a open flight plan for SAR purposes.

He saw an opportunity to get you on the ground quicker while keeping the traffic flowing instead of trying to fit you in later with the rest of the inbound aircraft. You lessened his workload and in turn saved you some time/fuel too. The window of opportunity was probably closing fast & made him hesitate while trying to talk to you.😂
Thanks for sharing this interaction with us. 😊

Honestly radio and direction is the scariest thing for me not to fly. Flying is one thing but missing a radio call and getting a phone number is my biggest fear

If you offer to cancel and remain with the tower controller, you may also get back in even more quickly.

ATC: "N123YZ, say altitude."
N123YZ: "ALTITUDE!"
ATC: "N123YZ, say airspeed."
N123YZ: "AIRSPEED!"
ATC: "N123YZ, say cancel IFR."
N123YZ: "Eight thousand feet, one hundred fifty knots indicated.

I once had KPBI ground forget about me at a hold short for 15 mins.
