As a former skinny guy, I can say putting reminders on your phone to eat is very helpful.

Most people who label themselves as hard gainers don't have poor genetics. Nor do they possess divine metabolisms. In truth, they have super small appetites. This is the real reason why they struggle to gain size. Of course there are outliers, but those do not represent the majority of "hard gainers".

In my experience I've found that "hard gainers" either do one of two things or both:

1. They have an all or nothing mentality which causes them to quit lifting for weeks or months at a time the moment they miss a couple workouts in a row. Since they're "hard gainers", that means all is lost. Everything has to be working perfectly for them to see progress you see, so there's no point even going on until their life frees up enough for them to devote FULL ATTENTION to their impossible plight. Meanwhile the rest of us grind out slow, steady results.

2. They don't take long enough rest periods between sets. Because they're not moving much weight in their minds they feel bored and unsatisfied with what just happened. So they try to "get more volume in" by adding side orders of curls or whatever. Every damn time I've ever worked out with a hard gainer, particularly if they're an endurance athlete, they have to do curls in between every fucking set. Then they come back to their set not fully rested and don't move much weight and the cycle continues until the next time they miss a few workouts and give up.

I identify heavily with what’s discussed in this video. I used to use the fast metabolism excuse, then I started weighing my meals and stuff and now I’m 5 lbs heavier and my progress in the gym’s constant and fast. I’m still a novice, but at least now I’m moving forward instead of being stuck at 140 lbs haha.
Awesome video, Alex, please keep them coming!

I think hardgainers are affected by poor training programs and an inadequate diet. Before I started following you in 2015 I was running splits as I didnt know any better . But i grew relatively quickly after following a strength based full body program

Nobody is a hard gainer I thought I was like everyone else saying “ oh but I eat like crazy “ until I actually started tracking my macros and realized I was in a deficit most of the time ! Ever since then I’ve been actually putting effort into eating and adding calories throughout the day and I’m getting bigger and stronger after every workout :D

This argument is often used to dismiss actual hardgainers. But other than that I agree

I was 135lbs @ 5' 9 most of my life. I'd say all of these points are accurate. One thing you might also want to consider are food allergies. If you can't properly digest the food you are eating, you won't gain muscle. I found out I am allergic to dairy and once I stopped eating cheese 2x a day and drinking half a gallon of whole milk w/ whey protein, i felt significantly better and was able to build muscle.

Hey Alex, just wanted to say thank you for the novice program. Been running it for almost 3 months and am making leaps and bounds compared to my last program. If anyone is new to the channel and are a novice, I 100% recommend the program!

Yes, proper nutrition and proper routine.
I was a hard gainer until i realized that i was starving myself and that i was incredibly strong(er) that what i thought. Proper warm up that ease it self into a one rep max work out also helps, because otherwise I could lift heavy but my muscles would tear. And protein is important too, i was bearly eating enough protein to maintain muscle mass.
Thank you Destiny and thank you all for the support.

Something can be said about patience as well. I felt bad about my weight needlessly my natural appetite stays between 2500 and 2800 calories and at 20 I was 150 now I’m 170 eating the same calories and my strength went up. Some people it’s way faster then 7 years. But some people just need patience. I finally realized when I rushed it I got sick and weaker than when I relaxed and let things come more naturally. What’s the rush?

I live with my mom its a bit difficult to eat a lot for me. Would you say i should eat junk instead of nothing? a serious question. I dont earn my own money to buy like all that good stuff like fish or chicken breast broccoli. Just eating the stuff she makes and some days she doesnt make any cause of work. So as a skinny dude would u say i should eat junk instead of nothing?

As a “hardgainer” this is very true ....in the past year I’ve forced myself to eat out of my comfort zone by about 1000 calories and focused on getting progressively stronger on the compound gains I’ve ever made
