*Insights*

Before mixing this project, I spent roughly half an hour or so on a call with the legendary DaddyPhatSnaps learning about his mixing and mastering process, and how to improve on my own. With this new knowledge I hoped to give a more professional sound to this mix, and ensure that everyone’s voices were sounding great. I learned so much from the technical process of mixing this rap, especially with everyone’s voices all being so different from each other, and I’m looking forward to using these techniques in future projects to make my music sound as clean as I can get it!
What inspired me to create this Death Note track was mainly the instrumental from Leechy Boi. It had such a twisted, dark atmosphere to it and instantly got me thinking about Death Note when he first sent it to me. The beat also largely shaped how I wrote and performed my own verse, as I thought a whispery, softer approach would both contrast and compliment the instrumental in a relatively creepy/dark way. Leechy Boi described his sound as “Ghostcore”, and I tried to build on that by attempting to match the haunting feeling that I got from his production. I’m super grateful to him for allowing me to use his beat, none of this would have been possible/the same without it! (Also he’s selling beats atm, go check them out if you’re interested! ;P)
After some constructive criticism regarding my rapping, I’ve been trying to switch up my delivery and practice writing raps that flow better than previous verses have in the past. Though my whispery delivery was, as those of you who follow me on Twitter might know, partially due to me having COVID and therefore finding it harder to support my voice, I definitely experimented with it and tried to branch into an area in my range that I haven’t rapped in before. I then surrounded it with melodic rap to be safe, in case the whisper was a hit and miss lol. If people end up liking the lower whispery sound, I might have to use it again in a future rap or two! :3

That’s all from me! Hope you’re all staying safe and having a wonderful weekend! :D

I feel like each voice really exemplified the different parts of Light. You are probably the part who really cares about Justice, then the second part is the part of him that's prideful and bored, and then there's the genuine anger at the rotten world.

This song is amazing! I haven't ever watched/read Death Note, but this song makes me want to. Regardless, this song has a killer tone (literally).

This is an analysis of the language and tone (I'm just taking notes on my own here, but have a look if you like :D)

Breakdown of why this song (lyrics, video, voicing and everything) is so damn good.

0:15 - here, you can see a guy who genuinely thinks that what he's doing is right. He feels a sense of responsibility to use the power that's been put into his hands. The clips of people falling to him show the lengths he's willing to go. He's still in control, but we can see the makings of a killer.

0:30 - There's an air or malaise to this part. All this pressure is starting to make him feel sick. He mentions heart attacks and palpitations - the anxiety is rising. He pops propranolol like candy, but it doesn't help (it's a nice alliteration / plosive). He also cracks his knuckles (you can actually hear the sfx!). This makes you think about how long he sits at his desk in this state, not eating, sleeping, or seeing daylight.

0:38 - The power's starting to go to his head. For the first time, he sees the amount of control he has over death with his book. We can see the beginnings of a god complex.

0:45 - His ambitions are getting bigger and bigger; he believes he can act as the figure of justice for the entire world with the ability to kill undetected.

0:53 - Consequently, he believes he can take matters into his own hands, and decide someone's right to live. Without an organisation to complicate the process, he can simply deliver 'justice' as he sees fit. He sees himself as the divine retribution. At this point, the police know that something's wrong, immediately making them his enemy, hence "death will find them."

1:01 - Aah, the amazing hook of the song. It really gives the vibe of a dangerous and elusive serial killer with a god complex, able to deliver 'justice' from the shadows. People are talking and speculating about him like Jack the Ripper. His mindgames are messing with the police.

1:17 - He's directly addressing his nemesis now.

1:35 - There's no pretense now. It's all about killing and the thrill he gets from it. He thinks he's unstoppable.

1:51 - The world knows about him even if they can't see how the victims were killed. The cops are hot on his trail, and it's all about mindgames now. He's aiming for the top; to make himself a god in the mortal world. Anyone who opposes him can go to hell.

2:07 - The hook again. The clock has turned red. Time is running out.

2:22 - He's completely lost his sanity. His soul lies in the pen in his hand. No one, friends or family matter to him. He's the only one superior, and important. He sees himself as God, with the power to kill anyone who opposes him. That screaming rap shows that he DEMANDS others to acknowledge his superiority.

2:52 - The cops are closing in. They still don't know who exactly they're looking for. I honestly don't know who that woman might be, but if he's killed her, it only shows that justice is out the window - anyone who might be a danger can die. Paranoia. That whispery voice only adds to the eeriness of the song, and the descent into madness.

3:07 - the hook again. It's all red. The endgame is approaching. The humming at the end shows that the story is reaching it's climax.

I was not prepared. I WAS NOT PREPARED. Leechy wrecked me. I immediately went and looked him up to see what else he's done. and you and Breeton were in perfect synergy, as you always are on the tracks you two do together. This was such a treat.

I don't normally comment, but I just wanted to comment on how much your music helps me in my life. I'd been going through a period of consistently saying that I wouldn't do something wrong that I knew I shouldn't and telling the Lord that. Finally had a moment where I sat in prayer for a while and asked the Lord for some help. I've definitely felt a change now, and I just wanted to say that your music helps me with my faith. All of your songs this year have been absolute heat!
