Συκοφάγος (Oriolus oriolus) - Eurasian Golden Oriole

Ο συκοφάγος - sycophagus (Oriolus oriolus) είναι ένα εντυπωσιακό και πανέμορφο πτηνό της οικογενείας των Οριολιδών. Η λέξη auriolus σημαίνει «χρυσός», «φτιαγμένος από χρυσό», ή «χρυσόχρωμος», αλλά και «όμορφος», «μεγαλοπρεπής» με αναφορά στο χαρακτηριστικό κίτρινο χρώμα του αρσενικού.
Η ελληνική του ονομασία οφείλεται λανθασμένα στη συνήθειά του να τρέφεται με σύκα, κάτι που γίνεται μόνο σε περιοχές όπου υπάρχουν τα συγκεκριμένα δένδρα, ενώ δεν αποτελούν το κύριο μέρος της διατροφής του.
Ο συκοφάγος τρέφεται τόσο με φυτική όσο και με ζωική ύλη και συγκεκριμένα με έντομα κυρίως κάμπιες, πεταλούδες και ζαχαρούχα γλυκά φρούτα, όπως κεράσια, μούσμουλα κλπ. Την τροφή τους την βρίσκουν στα φυλλώματα των δένδρων και σπάνια στο έδαφος.

The Oriolus oriolus is an impressive and beautiful bird of the Oriolidae family. The word auriolus means "gold", "made of gold", or "golden", but also "beautiful", "majestic" with reference to the characteristic yellow color of the male.
Its Greek name is wrongly due to its habit of eating figs, something that happens only in areas where there are specific trees, while they are not the main part of its diet.
The sycophagus feeds on both plant and animal matter and specifically on insects, mainly caterpillars, butterflies and sugary sweet fruits, such as cherries, medlars, etc. Their food is found in the foliage of trees and rarely in the ground.
