This is great information. I have been doing this exact procedure for several years. It requires a lot of water until it runs clear and it also cleans out your black and gray tank sewer hoses. I think anyone who is relying on chemicals allone would be astounded at what they are leaving behind in their tanks. I was when I first started doing this!

Maybe it was just coincidence, but using borax and dawn has cleaned my gray enough to get the sensors working again. I use the Camco version of the flush king and it keeps my black tank fairly clean, though I do need to take the time to really flush since it still has brown after 5-7 runs. Last week used my method and had chunks the size of the palm of my hand come out of gray and this week is the first time it read empty. I also leave it open for a couple of days after flushing so I don't have to worry about dumping it out of whack with my black tank.

A flush king was the first purchase I made when we got our first RV. It works very very well! With Borax and the flush king, no smell, sensors work, and 4 flushes at dump works very well for us.

Can you use warm water to clean your tanks?

I can't get my vent cap loose. It should just unscrew but it won't budge. I wonder if I can just put a bag over it to keep the odor out?

Wow Brother,
This was a great class with key component items from "Jim the Master Guru!" I'm using your handy links to build myself a tank maintenance kit. Thank you!

Cheers, Eric

We had our tanks cleaned by Clean Tank in Florida and two months later the sensors don’t read correctly. We did everything they said and used the pinesol mixture and brought the flush king and used that too. Our flush king connectors broke off after several uses. Now it’s too late to return it so do we purchase another $50 item?

Wow. I knew it we are renting a RV and it's so bad we all been sick. They have everything open going into a septic line like at a campground makes so much sense

Oh my goodness, I've never heard anyone talk about that odor from under the sink. I have that too and I'm going to see if changing that value fixes it. I couldn't figure it out. It's sort of smells like urine, so I thought somehow the odor was coming from the black tank, even after rinsing and rinsing it.

I’ve been using the Calgon/pine-sole method thanks to you guys! We love it, works great

I have never found a tank treatment that controls the odor which is all I am concerned with. Instead after dumping and rinsing I put 6 gallons of water in along with a box of baking soda. The baking soda keeps the poop from sticking below the toilet. I also do not put TP in the tank. I can often go 2-3 weeks between dumping because it is mostly liquid with some solids. My gray tank stays open because it has a leak that I have not found yet nor have I found anyone that will find it - which I believe it is near the drain where the furnace heat blows onto it.
My valve that needed replaced was under the kitchen sink. We bought it at Home Depot.

Great information and I bet a lot of people are looking at that valve you replaced after watching this!
